Around 25km south of Egilsstadir, Hotel Hallormsstadur is nestled in a large forest (a rarity in Iceland) with spectacular views across Lake Logurinn and the highlands beyond. Hotel Hallormsstadur has a smart, contemporary design with accommodation including guest rooms and cottages, all with private bathrooms. You can choose from two restaurants. Lauf is renowned for its sumptuous dinner buffet of smoked meats and fish, salads, sushi, cheeses and pastries, while the Kol Bar & Bistro specialises in Icelandic fare with an exotic twist, full of Asian flavours. Both restaurants enjoy beautiful forest and lake views. A large deck is perfect for dining al fresco.

The hotel’s spa features a hot tub, Finnish sauna and infrared sauna – a tempting retreat after hiking, cycling, horse riding or joining an all-terrain vehicle safari through the 740-hectare birch forest of Hallormsstadur. The waterfall of Hengifoss, Iceland’s second tallest at 128m is just a short drive away – the hike to its base involves a steady two-hour climb, but the views of the horsetail falls sweeping across red-striped cliffs is well worth it. Continue on the road into the highlands for wonderful views of the snow-capped volcano Mt Snaefell and a visit to the impressive Karanhjukar Dam. The road south from Hallormsstadur, meanwhile, takes you on an unforgettable coastal journey to Vatnajokull National Park and iconic sights like the Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon and Svartifoss waterfall.
