Grootberg Lodge, Damaraland

Introduction

Grootberg Lodge is perched on the rim of the Etendeka Plateau, with stunning views overlooking the Klip River Valley. This remote lodge is 100% owned by the conservancy and all the staff are employed from the community.

12,000 hectares have been set aside by the Khoadi-Hoas community for conservation and tourism and you can explore this pristine wilderness on foot or by game drive vehicle. Various activities are offered at the lodge including scenic drives on top of the plateau, rhino tracking and game drives searching for desert elephants.

Meals are served inside on cold evenings when the fireplace is appreciated or on the veranda on warmer nights.

Grootberg Lodge features 16 chalets made from rock and thatch (two are suitable for families), all with a small deck to enjoy the views, perhaps spotting a black eagle soaring through the air. Tea and coffee making facilities are available in all rooms.

Optional Activities

You may wish to consider the following optional activities at Grootberg Lodge:

Elephant tracking
A guide with a tracker will take you out into the surrounding conservancy in search of the elusive desert elephants. Damaraland is the best place in Namibia to see animals completely unfenced and in the wild. You will not see animals in large quantities here, but the sightings can be more rewarding. Desert adapted elephants are probably the best known of the region’s unique wildlife but it is also possible to see springbok and oryx in this area too. This tour also gives you the opportunity to learn more about the lifestyle of the local Damara-Nama people.

Rhino Tracking
Your guide, along with the game trackers, will take you in an open 4×4 game vehicle down to the Klip River Valley searching for the elusive desert adapted black rhino. Part of the tracking will take place on foot (walking approximately 1-3 hours). This is a full day activity involving bumpy roads and walking in rocky terrain. Sightings are not guaranteed but are very rewarding if you are lucky enough to spot rhinos.

Scenic drives on top of the plateau
Grootberg is known for its spectacular views and a scenic trip on top of the Etendeka Plateau is highly recommended. As well as witnessing stunning vistas, there is also the possibility of seeing a variety of wildlife including zebra, kudu, oryx and occasionally leopard and lion. The shy klipspringer is sometimes seen leaping from ledge to ledge on the steep cliffs of the mountain. Drives can be done in the morning or late afternoon, when they will end with a sundowner.

Guided walk
Your guide will meet you at the lodge for an early start to explore the plateau on foot. You will have an opportunity to see and learn about the local flora, the amazing sedimentary and volcanic rock formation of the Etendeka Mountains and perhaps encounter the wildlife living on the plateau.
