Finnish Lapland covers an area of almost 100,000sq. km and is found almost entirely within the Arctic Circle. Its rolling hills and sweeping plains are blanketed by coniferous forests, the uplands are peppered with birch forests, and Finland’s third largest lake – Lake Inari – is a beautiful place to explore on a boat trip and an important area for the Sami people.

Nearby, the Sami Siida Museum in Inari itself is regarded as one of the best places in the world to find out more about the history and culture of the region’s indigenous people. Meanwhile Lemmenjoki National Park has an abundance of rivers, forests and fells, and is crisscrossed with well marked trails. After days spent exploring make sure you indulge in the quintessentially Finnish pastime, relaxing in a sauna.

In winter, the spectacular snowscape sparkles by the light of the stars and the northern lights during the kaamos (polar night). By contrast, the seemingly endless summer days under the midnight sun are perfect for watching wildlife and exploring the great outdoors, before the autumn colours – known as the ruska – set the countryside aflame.
