Lake Moeraki Wilderness Lodge, Hokitika

Introduction

The award-winning Wilderness Lodge Lake Moeraki enjoys a stunning setting in the heart of Te Wahipounamu, the southwest New Zealand UNESCO World Heritage Area. Surrounded by virgin rainforest, pristine lakes and rivers and the wild Tasman Sea coast, this eco-friendly lodge is perfect for nature lovers, active travellers and wilderness seekers alike.

During your time at Lake Moeraki you can hike rainforest trails and coastal tracks, kayak on tranquil lakes, and discover the region’s abundant wildlife including penguins, seals and native bird species. Two complimentary nature activities are offered each day, accompanied by a naturalist guide and designed to be fun, educational and interactive, ensuring you leave with a greater understanding of this pristine wilderness. You may wish to learn more about the conservation of the rainforest, join a kayaking lesson on Lake Moeraki, or take an evening stroll to discover the stars of the southern sky and marvel at thousands of glow worms lighting up the rainforest. Additional half-day or full-day guided activities can also be arranged (payable locally), allowing the chance to explore further afield in a small group.

One of the biggest draws of the Wilderness Lodge Lake Moeraki is the chance to encounter the rare tawaki, or Fiordland crested penguin, which is only found in the southwest corner of New Zealand. Each year, between July and early December, these comical looking birds return from the sea to breed. Here you will have the opportunity to sit on a remote beach, listening to the waves and watching penguins emerge from the ocean, waddle across the sound and head into the rainforest to find their nests. The lodge works closely with the Department of Conservation and has established a Wildlife Refuge to protect the penguins from predators and monitor breeding.

At the end of a day of wilderness adventures, return to the comfort of the lodge and a hearty meal in the excellent Riverside Restaurant, which serves contemporary New Zealand cuisine featuring local seafood and meats, complemented by a wide choice of the finest New Zealand wines. All your meals are included during your stay. The 28 guest rooms are stylish and spacious, with ensuite bathroom and rainforest or river views.
