At 469m above sea level, Modrudalur is the highest situated and still inhabited farm in Iceland. Vast areas of the highlands belong to the farm and the sheep can be grazed almost all year round, as part of the country lies in the rain shadow of the great ice cap of Vatnajökull. An area that has been an important waypoint throughout Icelandic history, it was crossed by two trails known from the time of ancient sagas as the Trails of the Bishops and of Samur.
Offering a selection of 2 houses or private rooms in the farmhouse, a stay at Modrudalur is all about getting outside and exploring the area. Offering glacier tours and with a landscape that is cut through with a number of interesting walking trails, this is an incredible base from which to explore Iceland’s natural north.
The hotel’s restaurant and coffee house provide a variety of classical Icelandic meals and baking, including hearty lamb and vegetable soups and the so called ‘Modrudalskleinur’.
