Mungumby Lodge, near Cooktown

Introduction

Set within tropical gardens, the ten bungalow Mungumby is a private wilderness retreat. With the perfect opportunity to swim in jungle waterfalls and observe wildlife, the lodge makes a lovely base while exploring north Queensland’s pristine wilderness and intriguing Aboriginal culture.

A boutique, resort-style property, Mungumby sits at the apex of three distinct tropical landscapes – primitive rainforest, expansive outback and a sparkling coastline which sits on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef. The wildlife in the area is therefore incredibly abundant, having even drawn Sir David Attenborough to come and explore. Guided walks are highly recommended, giving guests the opportunity to observe the incredible wildlife of the area, pointed out by the highly knowledgeable residents. For those who seek something a little different, fishing excursions can also be arranged as can kite surfing and visits to Aboriginal petroglyphs.

The Lodge can be reached either by 40 minute flight or by road. From Cairns it is 3.5 hour drive on the inland route, or a scenic 6 hour journey along the famous Bloomfield Track by 4WD. Featuring ten wooden bungalows with ensuite bathrooms and private patios, each bungalow is scattered throughout the gardens of the homestead, which is used as a communal area by guests, where telephone and e-mail are available.

Please note that there is no mobile phone coverage in this area.
