nThambo Tree Camp, Greater Kruger

Introduction

nThambo Tree Camp is located in the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve, one of the least commercially developed areas of Kruger. The reserve shares unfenced borders with Timbavati and Kruger National Park making it a prime wildlife area. It is also a haven for bird watchers.

There are only five thatched chalets and a maximum of ten guests at any one time ensures an intimate feel. All the chalets are elevated on stilts for better views over the bush. nThambo is rustic but comfortable and all rooms have mosquito nets and pedestal fans.

Dinner is served communally overlooking the wilderness. Often, after dinner, guests and guides will retire to the boma area and share wildlife stories around the campfire.

The camp is unfenced so there is the chance to see animals in and around camp. There is a small waterhole in front of camp but don’t be surprised to see elephants drinking from the pool! Guides will escort guests to and from their rooms at night.

The camp prides itself on being eco-friendly, using a greywater system, solar power and an in-house recycling programme.

Activities

Game drives
You will set out on two game drives a day with experienced rangers in open 4WD Toyota Land Cruisers, which are perfect for wildlife viewing and great photographic opportunities. The afternoon game drive includes a sundowner stop before the game drive continues into the night searching for nocturnal animals and predators coming out to hunt.

Bush walks
If you want a different experience, you can opt to replace a morning game drive with a bush walk. Bush walks are led by experienced rangers with specialised training in approaching dangerous game and you will be given full guidance on how to behave when encountering animals. Bush walks allow you to track animals on foot, view wildlife from a different perspective and immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of Africa.
