Undoubtedly one of the most remote camps in southern Africa, Serra Cafema is located in the extreme north-west of Namibia on the banks of the Kunene River. This intimate and peaceful camp is inspired by the area’s Himba people, with a unique mix of modern and fresh elements alongside natural materials that reflect the surrounding landscape.
A stay at Serra Cafema is an unforgettable experience. This area is one of the harshest environments on the planet and the lodge boasts endless vistas across stark plains, ancient valleys and rugged peaks. The landscapes in this area are spectacular and the presence of such a substantial river in the middle of the desert seems truly miraculous.
Accommodation at Serra Cafema consists of riverside wooden and thatched villas on spacious, elevated decks which blend smoothly into the picturesque surroundings. Each guest room includes a sunken seating area, an extra large bed with canopy and netting, tea and coffee making facilities, indoor and outdoor showers, and a large private viewing deck for private dining. There are also several ceiling fans to keep cool in the summer months and in winter hot water bottles and extra blankets are provided.
The main central area overlooks the river and has a lower-level oval seated area that is ideal for night-time star gazing. There are also indoor and outdoor dining areas, a sunken lounge, library and swimming pool, all sharing views of the Kunene River. The details within the camp are uniquely Namibian, with an emphasis on locally sourced materials and crafted furniture.
Game viewing in this area is limited to herds of oryx, springbok and Hartmann’s mountain zebra. The Kunene River also has a large population of Nile crocodiles. Burchell’s courser and Benguela long-billed lark are among the characteristic bird species to be found in this area.
Serra Cafema is often visited by the local Himba people and is one of the best places in Namibia for cultural interactions. Other activities include traversing sand dunes on 4×4 safaris, floating down the Kunene River on a boat trip, watching crocodiles basking on the river banks as you drift by. For those who enjoy exploring on foot, there are mountain and river valley walking trails.
