Aurora Sky Station

Home Aurora Sky Station

Located in the heart of Abisko National Park in Swedish Lapland, Aurora Sky Station, sometimes known as Abisko Sky Station, and the surrounding park are renowned as one of the best locations in the world for observing the northern lights.

Visit between November and March, when the skies are inky black, for the best chance of viewing the aurora borealis. Stay at Abisko Mountain Station, exclusive in the UK to Discover the World.

One of the best places to see the northern lights

Aurora Sky Station benefits from a piece of natural good luck; prevailing winds here push cloud away from the sky station meaning that the skies are almost always stunningly clear, offering fantastic sightings just about every night, if the conditions in the Earth’s upper atmosphere are right. And being up in the mountains there is no light pollution to hinder viewing.

Reach the Sky Station by chairlift, taking in the silence and star studded night around you as you go. At the top, it boasts a large outside deck ideal for aurora watching. Inside you can warm up by a log fire and keep a look out for the lights through enormous picture windows. There is the option to enjoy a delicious three-course dinner in the cosy restaurant or spend time looking around the small aurora borealis exhibition. Don’t forget to dress for the cold Arctic climate, wear extra warm clothing, especially since you will be standing still outside for extended periods.
