Embracing Slow Travel on a Norwegian Coastal Voyage with Havila

If there were a blueprint for how to unwind, it might resemble the route of a coastal voyage along Norway’s elegant coastline. The country’s legendary fjords seen up close are humbling and provide the majestic backdrop to an unhurried journey. A Norwegian coastal cruise is a journey that priorities simple pleasures. Contemplating epic landscapes, enjoying leisurely dining, star gazing on deck and breathing in fresh, crisp air in abundance.

Having the time to take it all in is rare in our increasingly connected lives. Creating an environment to do just that is what a voyage aboard one of Havila fleet of hybrid ships delivers. The newest and most sustainable vessels to ply Norway’s iconic Coastal Express route between Bergen and Kirkenes, their fleet of small ships offer a laidback atmosphere. They are also sustainable combining liquid natural gas-fuelled sailing with up to four hours battery powered sailing. That means you can soak up Norway’s natural wonders in silence. Total immersion in ageless beauty and plenty of time for reflection.

A coastal voyage is a great way to experience slow travel. Your time is a relaxing mix of watching a very scenic world go by mixed with time ashore. And once you’re onboard, you don’t have to pack and unpack each day, yet the view is constantly refreshing.

Travel Specialist, Darren, gives us his tips and insights into sailing Norway’s coast, the slow way.

How does it feel to slow down and appreciate the scenery?

The slow pace of life on-board really makes the days seem longer. You quickly pick up on the change of pace, which seems far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The moments when the ship switches to its electric power are magical. Make a conscious effort to listen to the sounds of silence. It is a rare thing that should be savoured.

What makes the public spaces and atmosphere onboard conducive to slowing down?

There’s a relaxed on-board feel to Havila with no dress code or glitzy on-board entertainment like large cruise ships. Lots of floor to ceiling windows around the ship help you feel connected to the landscape. You can just stop and look at the world wherever you are. My favourite spots are the top deck observation lounge with 180-degree views and out on deck at the aft. I liked seeing where we had just come from through the wake.

One of my standout moments in terms of being in the moment was sailing through Hjørundfjord, east of Alesund. I was sat in the hot tub, coffee in hand and surrounded by epic fjord views on each side. Bliss.

Do the voyages feel unhurried allowing for true relaxation and immersion?

There are some quick stops to let the locals on and off – this is still a working route – as well as well-known port stops, where there’s a good choice of excursions for exploring. Your days are, therefore, a mix of taking in new sights onshore and relaxing on-board. There is always a good spot to just sit and practice the art of being a human being.

If you choose to cruise between September and mid-April, you’ll slot into northern lights season as you head up the coast. Aurora hunting is an activity that can’t be rushed, fitting perfectly into the slow travel concept. Onboard ship you’re far away from light pollution and as the ship is on the move, you’ve chances to clear any pesky cloud cover.

What are your tips for digital detoxing on board?

Even though Wi-Fi is included the signal is not that strong. That’s a good thing. Switch off your Wi-Fi and data and settle into one of the lounges or head out on deck. The scenery is the star of this show, and you want to relish being part of it. You can test your ornithological knowledge too, spotting seabirds.

I returned from my trip feeling like I had properly wound down rather than having rushed around all the time. I highly recommend.
