Travel deep into Iceland’s rugged interior to Askja, a complex of nested calderas within the surrounding Dyngjufjoll mountains, which rise to 1,510m.
The 1875 eruption here had a heavy impact on the population of Iceland, particularly those in the east, and eventually resulted in a mass wave of emigration, most notably to Canada. Your powerful superjeep and knowledgable driver/guide will then take you to the green oasis at the foot of Mt. Herdubreid, home of legendary outlaws and the Queen of the Elves. On the way back, stop at Modrudalur, which at 469 metres above sea level, is the highest farm in Iceland.
