Introduction

Choose from a range of adaptable cycling options to best suit your interests and requirements.

The Atacama is the ideal place for a cycle. While some areas will provide more challenging terrain, there are a great many interesting sites that’s can easily be reached from San Pedro de Atacama on fairly good roads and tracks. See anything from ancient fortresses and stunning valleys, to flamingo filled lagoons and jaw dropping mountain views on an assortment of options that vary in exertion, length, location and elevation.

Below we have selected two popular rides, but if they don’t appeal, simply tell us your requirements and preferred level of exertion and we will find you your perfect guided tour.

HALF DAY BICYCLE RIDE TO VALLE DE LA LUNA (MOON VALLEY)

Cycle along the main road out of San Pedro de Atacama until the first stop at Las Tres Marias (the three Maries), an eerie rock formation sculpted by the salt and wind. The excursion continues to the so-called Amphitheatre, a natural oval formation resembling a traditional Roman theatre. Further ahead is ‘the large dune’, the highest in the area and an ideal site for great sunset pictures. Next, the ride continues to Cavernas de Sal (salt caves) going through the caves covered with pieces of gem-like crystals made of salt, which have been formed by high environmental pressure and a lack of humidity. After four hours of cycling, relax and return to San Pedro by car.

Duration: 4.5 hour approx. (Varies with fitness and speed of participants)

Operates: Daily, year round

Prices from approximately: £206pp (private)

Private excursion prices are per person, but based on a party of 2

HALF DAY BICYCLE RIDE TO LAGUNA CEJAR

Cycle south from San Pedro de Atacama, going through the traditional communities of Solor and Cucuter, towards the Atacama Salt Flat. The trip’s final destination is Laguna Cejar situated some 30 km (18.6 mi.) from San Pedro and at 2,300 metres above sea level (7,545 ft.). These natural sinkholes are noted for their high salt content, offering bathers a Dead Sea style floating experience in their calm waters. The surrounding landscape is jaw-dropping, with blue-turquoise waters contrasting with the shimmering white salt of the flat, the yellow and green reeds on the lake shore and the elegant pink flamingos feeding in the shallows. The ride back is on an even road with some sandy patches.

Duration: 3 hours approx. (Varies with fitness and speed of participants)

Operates: Daily, year round

Prices from approximately: £251pp (private)

Private excursion prices are per person, but based on a party of 2
