Dettifoss Waterfall by Superjeep

from £147
5 hours Dec-Jun, Oct-Nov

Introduction

Dettifoss is Europe’s most powerful waterfall, with an astounding 212 tonnes of water per second flowing over its edge, causing the ground to shake! Accessible via a rough track, the perfect way to get there is by superjeep with an expert driver/guide, whether in summer or the icy depths of winter!

Dettifoss is part of the glacial river Jokulsa a Fjollum, which emerges from beneath the immense Vatnajokull glacier.

This tour starts from the North East of Iceland (Husavik, Akureyri or even by Lake Myvatn) with a drive to Asbyrgi which is undoubtedly one of Iceland’s most beloved natural wonders; this horse-shoe shaped gorge is located in Jokulsargljufur National Park.

The dramatic river canyon was formed 8,000 years ago when a volcanic eruption catastrophically exploded beneath the river and glacier above it. According to Norse myth, it was created by the hoof of Odin’s 8-legged horse, Sleipnir. From Asbyrgi, drive to Dettifoss, experiencing the thundering power of the waterfall before returning to your starting location.
