Introduction

Borgarfjordur Eystri is known for being one of the best places to hike or walk in Iceland whether you take a gentle one hour stroll to a several day serious mountain hike. These leisurely guided walks are all accompanied by a friendly local guide and are a fantastic way to familiarise with the beautiful nature that surrounds. Each walk is of a different theme either history and culture of the Bakkagerdi area, the breathtaking scenery and colourful rhyolite mountains or visit one of Iceland’s Largest Puffin colonies!

Puffins of Borgarfjordur Eystri – Guided walk

On this tour you will visit the area Hafnarholmi, home to a large puffin colony and known for being one of the best bird watching areas in the world. Accompanied by a local guide, take advantage of the viewing platform and specially made steps enabling you to get close to these beautiful birds. There will be plenty of time to take the perfect picture before heading to the harbour to get a glimpse of the traditional everyday life of the fisherman in the area before heading to the local fish factory where you can opt to try a lovely fish soup at the café (payable locally).

The colourful mountains and the city of Elves – Guided walk

This tour begins at the bottom of the fjord with a hike along to Brunavik. With your local guide you will follow the loose gravel trail up to the Hofstrandarskard pass. Enjoy the spectacular views over some of Iceland’s oldest mountains and the striking colours of the second largest area of the rhyolite rock in the country. On the way back head to Alfaborg the city of the Elves, an area recognised for its traditional folklore tales which many of the locals still believe in to this day. It is also home to the hidden people of Iceland so keep a close eye on the rocks you may be lucky enough to spot the queen of the Elves herself! The tour ends at the local café in Borgarfjordur Eystri (refreshments payable locally).

The city of Bakkagerdi – Guided walk

On this tour you will get a glimpse of the traditional everyday life in Borgarfjordur Eystri which is locally known as Bakkagerdi. In a three-hour long walk around town, accompanied by a local guide, you will experience the town’s true spirit in a way otherwise inaccessible. Along the way meet the friendly and welcoming locals and learn about their daily lives as well as the history, the culture and the architecture of this area. Visit the pretty local church, an old turf house still inhabited today and the working Fish factory where many of the locals work.
