HALF DAY TREKKING GUATIN

After a 30-km (18.6 mi.) drive from San Pedro, arrive at the Guatin ravine -better known as Cacti Valley. From this point trek deep into a rocky canyon lined by hundreds of cacti (Echinopsis Atacamensis) measuring almost 7 meters high (22 ft.), as well as several small waterfalls. After an approximate two-hour walk, Puritama’s Hot Springs are reached. Located 3,475 meters above sea level (11,400 ft.) and formed by mineral-rich pools of geothermal spring water that can reach temperatures of up to 35 °C (95 °F), this is the perfect place to relax and unwind after the walk.

(There is also an option to do a slightly longer walk on roughly the same route without visiting the hot springs).

Duration: 4 hours approx.

Operates: Daily, year round

Prices from approximately: £199pp (private) – includes entrance to Puritama Hot Springs

HALF DAY TREKKING CORNISAS

Transfer to Catarpe valley, the site of some intriguing Incan ruins. From here, the hike starts with an approximate 40-minute climb to the edge of Cordillera de la Sal (salt mountain range). The walk then continues for another hour, gaining in altitude and splendour along the way. Near the end of the walk, the trail goes through flatter terrain and ends in the gigantic dunes of Valle de la Muerte (Death Valley), with its moon-like landscape. A boxed lunch is included.

FULL DAY TREKKING SAIRECABUR VOLCANO

Depart San Pedro de Atacama at 06:00 am, taking the old route to Tatio and follow the Cuesta del Diablo road until reaching Saciel Camp. From here, a drive on a narrow road ends at an old sulphur mine. Upon reaching the entrance, the climb begins to the summit of the Sairecabur Volcano, 5,000 meters above sea level (16,404 ft.). The climb is three to four hours long and trekkers will cross boulders and rocky terrain. They will be rewarded for their work with stunning vistas of the surrounding landscape. After summiting, a two-hour descent follows to the mine’s entrance, where a vehicle will be waiting to drive the group back to San Pedro.  An expert mountain climber will accompany visitors throughout the hike.
