A tour that focuses on the tragic history of the Westman Islands, this day begins with a flight or a coach/ferry combination from Reykjavik that takes you to at Heimaey. On arrival, guests will learn all about the 1973 volcanic eruption that devastated the community and yet ironically, vastly improved the state of the harbour.
Half-buried houses are still visible along the edge of the lava flow and the earth’s heat can be felt in certain parts of the lava field.
A quick lunch can be enjoyed at leisure (not included), before guests have the option to board a boat tour (£47 supplement payable locally). This tour heads around the island, admiring the thriving life that clings to the island’s cliffs and magnificent rock caves. Iceland boasts the world’s largest puffin population and, in the summer months, these delightful little birds abound on these islands.
Return transfers from your Reykjavik accommodation to the airport, lunch and the local boat tour are not included.
