This fascinating experience really brings the desert to life: the coastal dune belt between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund may seem barren and uninhabited, but in fact it is teeming with a variety of tiny desert adapted animals.
Travelling by 4WD over the dunes, your guides will stop continuously to look for tracks (known locally as ‘reading the bushman newspaper’) and introduce you to some of the desert’s more elusive species. You may be lucky enough to witness the Dancing White Lady Spider cartwheeling down a dune at 44 turns per second, or perhaps encounter the transparent Namib Dune Gecko with its webbed feet, ideal for walking over soft sand. Observe shovel-snouted lizards digging into the dunes or follow the tracks of a desert chameleon or sidewinder snake. Along the way you will learn about the unique survival strategies of these creatures and the geology and formation of the desert, whilst admiring the vast and beautiful landscape around you.
