Plantation House, one of St Helena’s landmark historical attractions has recently been re-opened to the public for behind the scenes tours.
Plantation House was built in 1792 as a country estate for the Governor of the East India Company, and is known worldwide as the home of the St Helena Governor along with the oldest living animal in the world, Jonathan.
Lasting approximately one hour, tour guide Joyce Williams walks visitors through 200 years of history. Plantation House is a stone built Georgian house with 35 rooms, many of which are very large and connected by passages with archways. Of course a visit to Plantation House isn’t complete without a sighting of the four tortoises and visitors doing the tour will gain exclusive access to view the tortoises up close before retiring to enjoy some St Helena coffee or a cup of tea in the new coffee shop.
