Boarding a helicopter from the lakefront in Rotorua, you will head out for your aerial tour over White Island, New Zealand’s only active marine volcano.
Found 50 kilometres off the Bay of Plenty, your flight takes you out over the pristine ocean blue, where you can watch tour boats circle like tiny ants below you.
Your flight will carry you north over Hell’s Gate Thermal Valley, offering a stunning wash of geothermal colours and steams. From there, you will move on to the Pacific Ocean coastline, a rugged shore that contrasts the pristine oceanic blue against the harsh and unforgiving thermal browns, blacks and yellows.
Landing on the White Island’s crater rim, you will spend approximately one hour on a guided walk of this fascinating natural attraction. Witnessing the volcanic fury of the main crater as well as the stench of the sulphur deposits, it is incredible to imagine that you will also find remnants of human activity up here, in the remains of an old sulphur mine.
