Overview

By combining the relaxed approach of a rail journey with an intriguing itinerary through the heart of Europe, this is a holiday that will appeal to anyone looking for something a little bit different. We’ve taken five countries – each with a fascinating history steeped in the legacy of the Habsburg monarchy – and woven an itinerary through them that links Munich, Vienna, Ljubljana, Trieste and Venice.

In one unforgettable trip, you’ll travel through Bavaria and Austria, cross the Alps to reach Slovenia, tucked away at the top of the Adriatic, before exploring two of Italy’s most captivating cities. Returning to London by rail, you can choose to travel via Zurich, or splash out on the Venice Simplon Orient Express.

Germany: Munich

Well known for Lederhosen, Oktoberfest, FC Bayern and BMW cars, Munich embraces traditional and modern like few other European cities. Bavaria’s capital has opulent Baroque churches, grand palaces and excellent museums and galleries. You will have a full day to explore this complex, fascinating city – starting, no doubt, with the stunning central square of Marienplatz.

Austria: Vienna

Home of the Habsburg Monarchy for six centuries, Vienna’s Hofburg palace complex is the centrepiece of the city’s imperial grandeur. You could easily spend a day here, revelling in the glorious architecture, exploring the Sisi Museum and Imperial Apartments and visiting the Spanish Riding School where the famous Lipizzaner stallions strut their stuff. You have three nights here – plenty of time to appreciate Vienna’s distinguished musical heritage (Mozart, Beethoven and Hadyn to name just a few of the great composers associated with the ‘City of Music’) and sample decadent cakes and other culinary treats at its opulent coffee houses.

Slovenia: Ljubljana

Travelling from Vienna to Slovenia by coach takes you on a spectacular journey through the Alps. Small, but perfectly formed, Slovenia is a medley of forested peaks, lakes and unspoilt countryside with a modest 46km pinch of the Adriatic coastline. The beautiful little capital of Ljubljana is renowned for its ‘green living’ – the old heart of the city largely reserved for pedestrians and cyclists. With leafy, riverside walks, traditional restaurants, outdoor markets and a hilltop castle to explore, you will want to spend at least one of your days here – but Ljubljana also makes an excellent base for an optional day trip to nearby attractions like Predjama Castle and the Postojna Caves (less than an hour’s drive away).

Italy: Trieste and Venice

Almost entirely surrounded by Slovenia, Trieste was once the Habsburg empire’s thriving harbour city. Grand buildings frame Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia – a monumental square, open on one side to the glittering Adriatic – while the lighthouse (Faro della Vittoria) offers equally stunning views across the city and the sea. Trieste’s medieval heart, Citta Vecchia, is built on the ruins of a Roman city. There’s plenty to interest history buffs here, while food lovers should sample a traditional pork buffet – a throwback to the days of the Habsburg empire. From Trieste, you travel west by train to another Adriatic beauty. Three nights in Venice will make you fall, well and truly, under the spell of the ‘Floating City’, strolling its maze of streets, gliding in gondolas or simply sitting in a shady corner of Piazza San Marco, gazing at one of the world’s most romantic and iconic cityscapes.

Switzerland: Zurich

Homeward bound, via Milan, you’ll round off your Central European rail journey with a night in Zurich where you will have time to stroll the cobblestone alleys of the Niederhof area.

Itinerary

Day 1 London - Munich

Depart London in the morning, reaching Brussels in time for lunch. Continue to the Bavarian capital of Munich and transfer to your hotel for a two-night stay.

Day 2 Munich

Enjoy a full day exploring the cultural and historical highlights of this fascinating city. Visit the old city square of Marienplatz, framed by imposing buildings, like the Gothic Revival masterpiece of Neues Rathaus, and the setting for Munich’s famous Christmas market. The 15th-century Frauenkirche cathedral is also impressive – as is the extravagant Baroque interior of the Asam Church. For a taste of authentic Munich, don’t miss the Hofbrauhaus brewery and beer house founded in 1589. Maximilianstrasse, meanwhile, is awash with designer fashion and jewellery. Take a stroll in the Englischer Garten to witness a greener side to the city or cruise over to the futuristic BMW Museum. In the evening, enjoy Bavarian hospitality and a traditional meal of weißwurst (white veal sausage) with a pretzel and sweet mustard. Overnight Munich.

This morning is free for you to explore, perhaps visiting one or two of Munich’s famous museums and art galleries, such as the Neo-Renaissance Alte Pinatothek (with masterpieces by Rubens and van Dyck) or the contemporary Neue Pinakothek. In the afternoon, take the four-hour train journey to Vienna. Following three nights in Vienna.

Days 7-8 Ljubljana

For the best views of Ljubljana, walk up to the castle to gaze across the city’s terracotta-tiled rooftops. As well as offering a glimpse into the history of one of Europe’s smallest capitals, the 900-year-old castle also boasts a vineyard and one of Ljubljana’s best restaurants. The city is renowned for its culinary heritage. Wander the old quarter’s tangle of cobbled streets and squares where you can sample local street food like Carniolan sausage and štruklji (dough rolls with various fillings). You will also find dragons everywhere in Ljubljana. The city’s fire-breathing protector dates from ancient times and you can find them guarding Dragon Bridge. Other highlights include historic Prešernov trg Square and the leafy promenade along the banks of the Ljubljanica River.

With two full days here, you could divide your time between a day in the city and a day taking an optional tour to the spectacular Postojna Caves and the nearby Predjama Castle, wedged dramatically in a 123m-high cliff face. Both are less than an hour’s drive from Ljubljana. Other options include a tour into the heart of the Drava Plain, visiting the beautiful and ancient riverside town of Ptuj and its vineyards. Both nights Ljubljana.

Day 9 Ljubljana - Trieste

Travelling by coach, depart Ljubljana this morning for a 90-minute journey to Trieste, one of Europe’s most intriguing cities; neither quite Slovenian nor Italian. Once a great seaport of the Habsburg empire, Trieste’s stunning Adriatic waterfront is lined with neoclassical buildings and vibrant cafés. Facing the sea, the large square of Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful in Italy – and the perfect place to begin your appreciation of the city’s architecture and cuisine. Overnight Trieste.

Day 10 Trieste

A day at leisure in Trieste to explore the magnificent boulevards and piazzas, the Canal Grande and Castello di San Giusto. Visit the majestic white Miramare Castle, perched on the edge of the sea and built in the 19th century for Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg; learn about the seafaring history of Trieste at the Museo Del Mare and peruse the modern art at Museo Civico Revoltella. For local food, try jota (a hearty stew of beans, potatoes and sauerkraut) and strucolo de pomi (a light pastry filled with apples, raisins and pine kernels). Overnight Trieste.
