Overview

Award-winning broadcaster and bestselling author, Anita Rani, has embarked on a year of saying #YesToAdventure with Discover the World, and her first stop? The wild, otherworldly landscapes of Iceland. From delving into ancient ice caves to soaring over volcanic eruption sites, snorkelling between tectonic plates to gazing at the stars, her journey was nothing short of extraordinary.

Staying at iconic Iceland accommodation in prime locations for watching the northern lights for those travelling between late August and mid April, re-create Anita’s trip on your own tailor made holiday crafted by our Iceland specialists.

“I first visited Iceland 23 years ago for a music festival and was desperate to get back there. And when I did, it was everything I remember it being and more.

The landscape is unlike anywhere else—otherworldly, dramatic, and breathtakingly beautiful. The people are wonderful, friendly with a very good sense of humour (very dry). They have a respect and pride in their landscape, but it’s so alive they can’t ignore it.”

Upon arrival into Keflavik Airport, collect your rental vehicle and head east through the Reykjanes Peninsula and the outskirts of Reykjavik towards Hotel Ranga for a two-night stay in the heart of the Icelandic countryside.

A proud member of Small Luxury Hotels, Ranga blends four-star comfort with fine dining in the heart of South Iceland. Why not stay somewhere as extraordinary as your surroundings? Choose from a collection of globally inspired suites, each one themed after a different continent, from Antarctica to Asia, Australia to Africa, plus Icelandic and Royal suites for a local touch.

The restaurant serves up a seasonal, Nordic-inspired menu with a modern twist, blending the best local ingredients with a dash of French and Italian flair. By night, soak in an outdoor hot tub while gazing at the northern lights. There’s even a wake-up service, so you’ll not miss out should they occur after bedtime. By day, explore the volcanic landscapes of rural Iceland. A stay like no other.

Head out from the hotel on a Superjeep tour to Katla Ice Cave. Superjeeps are an Icelandic obsession – customised 4WD vehicles that can go almost anyway. The perfect way to explore Iceland’s rugged terrain, your driver guide will put the vehicle through its paces on route to the ice cave.

After breakfast at Hotel Ranga, drive back west towards Thingvellir National Park one of a trio of famed sites along the Golden Circle route. You may choose to detour via Geysir hot spring area and the spectacular two-tiered waterfall, Gullfoss. Thingvellir is the site of the world’s oldest parliament formed by the Vikings in AD 874. It is also where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet and it is within this fissure that you can don a dry suit and snorkel between the plates – a truly extraordinary experience. Silfra offers up to 100 meters of underwater visibility and is regularly rated among the world’s top dive sites.

Back on dry land, continue your journey north to the southern shore of Hvalfjordur and your stunning accommodation at Hvammsvik Nature Resort and Hot Springs. Overnight in the Club House, a beautifully renovated self-catering farmhouse with its own private hot tub.

Secluded luxury on the shores of Hvalfjordur, each house at Hvammsvik Nature Resort blends sleek, modern design with the rustic charm of its original structure. Set within a 1,200-acre family estate, this tranquil retreat overlooks a historic and remote fjord in southwest Iceland, offering breathtaking views of the water and dramatic mountain backdrops. Ideally located near many of Iceland’s most iconic sights, the resort is also home to natural geothermal pools, just a short stroll away. Sink into mineral-rich waters, breathe in the fresh coastal air, and experience true Icelandic serenity. Secluded, stylish, and deeply restorative, this is Iceland at its most peaceful.

Spend some time exploring the area or set off to Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik along Hvalfjordur. Once in Reykjavik, you might choose to take a helicopter flight over the volcanic landscapes of the Reykjanes Peninsula, perhaps even witnessing a live eruption.

Enjoy an early evening bathe in the geothermal waters of the Sky Lagoon with its spectacular 70-metre infinity edge overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Return to the city for a night on the town and an overnight stay.
