Exploring Bergen

There is plenty to do in Bergen for the normal traveller with lovely cafes, restaurants and museums to keep you busy, but less known perhaps are the many walking possibilities from Mount Floyen, just a short funicular ride away from the city centre. In just a few minutes you escape the busy hubbub of Bergen and you’re out in the fresh air and beautiful nature with many walking options. There is a daily 2 hour guided walk available which can be pre-booked, please visit www.floibanen.no for more details, it also has hiking suggestions with descriptions and maps available to download.

For those wanting a real challenge then Trolltunga, one of Norway’s most spectacular walks is one to consider. The trip starts in Skjeggedal a small village near Odda on the Hardangerfjord and with a distance of 23km to cover, the walk takes approximately 10 hours return journey, available from mid June to mid September. There are several attractions on route and guided trips can be arranged. Public transport is available from Bergen to Odda, then a local bus to Skjeggedal, but car hire is also an option.

Stavanger and beyond

The centre of Stavanger is quite compact making it easy to get around on foot and explore with the Old Town housing Europe’s best preserved wooden house settlement, consisting of over 170 white wooden houses. Once the European Capital of Culture, it has a lively and vibrant atmosphere with many cultural events and today is Europe’s oil and energy capital with a very international feel.

The region has many scenic attractions, including Lysefjord, Kjerag and the famous Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock), the most visited place in the region, which can be seen by a fjord cruise or for the more energetic by walking with or without a guided visit. There are different ways to access Pulpit Rock, but one of the options combines a fjord cruise enjoying the stunning nature and where you first will see the Pulpit Rock, then a few hours later you will enjoy the view from the top, with a 2 hour hike each way.

Kjerag is also a popular attraction by guided walking options from Stavanger and there are other guided hikes available to pre-book.

This short break is available as an independent trip using public transport options for travelling, or car hire is also possible giving you more flexibility to access different walking trails and attractions.
