Full description

This island is an ecologist's dream, a volcanic mass which has risen up out of the sea to be surrounded by a raised coral limestone reef named Makatea.

Enjoy the contrasting spectacular landscape, unspoiled and lush dense rainforest with sandy beaches tucked like little secrets into the coast and an unexpected central plateau - according to legend when the Polynesians landed on Atiu's shores, birds and insects were its only life.

Itinerary & Accommodation

Itinerary & Accommodation

Day 1: arrive Atiu

Take a 45-minute flight from Aitutaki and Rarotonga to reach Atiu. When travelling from Aitutaki, the flight passes by the uninhabited atoll of Manuae and the small island of Takutea, a designated nature reserve.

On arrival in Atiu join Birdman George as he takes you around Atiu's Jungle, showcasing the fascinating variety of birds, plants, foods and medicines. The island has become a sanctuary for endangered birds with recent introductions including the red lorikeet and the Rarotonga flycatcher. Atiu also has a myriad of caves. One is the home of a unique bird that echo locates its way through Anataketake cave's dark caverns. Atiu has many birds for its small size and is one reason why the traditional name "Enuamanu" means "land of the birds".

Retreat to Atiu Villas for your overnight stay and spend the rest of your day at leisure. An evening restaurant and bar is on site serving 2-course evening meals. There is also a swimming pool, tennis court and rental bicycles, motorcycles and cars should you wish to explore independently.

Day 2: Atiu

Enjoy breakfast on your villa veranda. Spend some time relaxing and enjoy the peace and tranquillity of your surroundings. After breakfast enjoy an Island Coffee Tour through the coffee plantations and factory. All coffee on Atiu is grown organically. This tour will educate you on how Arabica beans are fermented, sundried, roasted and packaged on the island. The tour ends at the Atiu Fibre Arts Studio with a coffee tasting session and the chance to browse around the gallery's exquisite traditional and contemporary textile art.

Spend the rest of your afternoon at leisure before flying back to Rarotonga or Aitutaki for the remainder of your holiday.
