Overview

Experience the charm of Nova Scotia on this week-long small group adventure. From the rugged shores of Peggy’s Cove to the breathtaking Skyline Trail in Cape Breton, this journey offers coastal landscapes and cultural treasures. Along the way, you’ll enjoy vibrant fishing villages, scenic hikes, a world-famous lighthouse, and a town once known for its rum-running past.

Your journey begins in Halifax, from where you’ll explore the UNESCO-listed town of Lunenburg and the charming fishing village of Peggy’s Cove – one of the most photographed spots in Canada. Continue on to the historic streets of Baddeck, with the lively rhythms of traditional Cape Breton fiddle music. Then venture north along the dramatic Cabot Trail, soaking in breathtaking coastal views, before ending your travels amid the storybook charm of Prince Edward Island.

This affordable holiday captures the true spirit of the Maritimes. With the guidance of an expert tour leader and a selection of unforgettable experiences included, you’ll also have the flexibility to personalise your trip with optional excursions (at an additional cost), making it as unique as your sense of adventure.

Welcome to Nova Scotia! Your adventure starts today in Halifax, where you’ll meet your local leader and fellow travellers. Located on the Atlantic coast of eastern Canada, Halifax is the capital of Nova Scotia and renowned for its rich maritime heritage and the iconic Citadel, a star-shaped hilltop fort completed in the 1850s. After the meeting, enjoy an orientation walk with your leader to familiarise yourself with the city, and perhaps join your group for dinner.

Today, travel to the UNESCO World Heritage site and historic town of Lunenburg on Nova Scotia’s South Shore. Take a leader-led walking tour through Mahone Bay and the nearby village of Blue Rocks, learning about this former fishing settlement that’s become a hub for artists and photographers. You’ll have some free time to wander the charming Old Town, designated a National Historic Site of Canada. As Lunenburg was once a centre for rum-running during Prohibition, be sure to try some of the local brews. Return to Halifax in the late afternoon.

Today, journey to the picturesque fishing village of Peggy’s Cove – it’s easy to see why this is one of the most photographed spots in Canada. With its rugged coastline, crashing Atlantic waves, vibrant fishing boats, and the iconic red-and-white lighthouse, it looks like a scene straight from a Maritimes postcard. Join your local leader for the Peggy’s Cove Rock Walk, a scenic trail winding along the glacier-carved shoreline dating back over 12,000 years. In the afternoon, you might choose to visit the Canadian Museum of Immigration or the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic (both are an additional cost) to delve into the region’s rich history.

Today, you’ll travel from Halifax to Baddeck, with a stop at the Millbrook Cultural and Heritage Centre along the way. Situated in the heart of a development owned by Millbrook First Nation, the centre shares the history and ongoing contributions of the Millbrook Mi’kmaq people in the Maritimes. Upon arrival in Baddeck, enjoy dinner with your group, followed by a lively local ceilidh – a traditional Scottish-inspired gathering where musicians come together to play Cape Breton tunes.

Today, you’ll journey along the scenic Cabot Trail, making your way to Cape Breton Highlands National Park for a relaxed hike. The highlight is the Skyline Trail – the park’s most iconic route – offering breathtaking panoramic views over the sea. After your hike, continue on to South Harbour for a unique local experience at an oyster hatchery. Learn first-hand how oysters are cultivated, try your hand at shucking, and of course, savour some freshly harvested oysters. If the weather is good, your leader may extend the drive along the Cabot Trail, a journey filled with stunning viewpoints and photo stops. Along the way, enjoy a picnic lunch before returning to Baddeck for the evening.

If you’re up early, consider starting your day with a visit to the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site (extra cost), where you can learn about the remarkable life and achievements of the famed inventor, scientist, and educator best known for creating the telephone. Afterward, set off on the drive from Baddeck to Charlottetown – the charming capital of Prince Edward Island and Canada’s smallest provincial capital. Upon arriving in the late afternoon, you might choose to explore the downtown area on foot. Wander along the scenic harbourfront or meander through leafy parks and Victorian-era streets lined with gabled homes. This evening, gather with your group for an included farewell dinner.

Your adventure ends in Charlottetown after breakfast. Chat with our Travel Specialists to make your Canadian adventure even more unforgettable – why not add an exciting city escape to vibrant Montreal or buzzing Toronto?
