Full description

This 3 night break delivers an authentic taste of Norwegian nature, hospitality and sheer beauty with which the Fjords are so famous for. Based at the Lavik Fjord Hotell, you can easily visit for a short break or add as an extension to a longer itinerary – either way this offers great value with half board, a 3 hour canoeing trip, bike rental for a day and hiking maps with recommendations all included.

Lavik Fjord Hotel

The hotel is owned and lovingly run by Laurens and Trijnie, who provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere for guests, along with good quality facilities and excellent dining in their restaurant. Just a minute or so from the quay, the hotel has 10 rooms in total, all with private bathroom, tea and coffee making facilities and some with balcony. Hotel facilities include a restaurant, cosy bar, terrace, wireless internet and parking.

Your stay here includes half board (breakfast and evening meal). For lunch it is possible to request a packed lunch with the hotel (payable locally) if you’re out and about, or a lunch menu is available from the restaurant. There is also a local grocery store a couple of minutes walk from the hotel.

Getting Active

Lavik is a hiker’s heaven with a network of well-marked trails suitable for all abilities. The hotel provides a map and staff can recommend a particular route for you. Some walks are available from the hotel, but others will need transportation to the starting point which the hotel can arrange.

Included in the package is a day bike rental. Cycle routes in the area are perfect for all cyclists – whether you are a weathered semi-pro or an enthusiastic newbie. Perhaps follow the coastal road to Leirvik and on to Hyllestad where you can visit the ancient Millstone Park and enjoy a guided tour, grind your own flour and bake bread. Or take the ferry to Oppedal and visit the quirky and unique Wilderness museum in Massnes.

In addition to the hiking and cycling, a canoe trip is also included on beautiful Lake Sorestrand. You will be transferred the short distance, provided with necessary equipment and shown the ropes before paddling at your leisure while the stunning scenery passes you by. The trip lasts about 3 hours before heading back to the hotel.

Other things to consider

There are so many other activities and excursions but so little time on our 3 night trip. Additional nights can be added allowing you the chance to immerse yourself into the region and explore further afield on boat trips or renting a car. The hotel can arrange car hire for you locally if you wish to find hidden spots from the comfort of your own vehicle and enjoy the spectacular nature of Norway! Lavik is a great base to visit the fjord coast with small fishing villages, charming towns, sandy beaches and thousands of islands waiting to be discovered.

At the entrance to the Sognefjord it is also possible to experience the largest fjord in Norway from the water. Staff at the hotel can advise of the boat departures (no pre-booking is needed). Visit Vik by express boat and visit a local Stave church, then travel back with the local postal service boat guaranteeing a real fjord adventure. This service only operates three times per week, but it is also possible to return by express ferry daily. Travel further to the picturesque village of Balestrand or the well-known resort of Flam where you can travel on the famous Flamsbana railway for one of the most picturesque rail journeys in the world.

Itinerary & Accommodation

Itinerary & Accommodation

Day 1 - Arrive in Lavik

On arrival at Bergen airport, take the airport coach service to the city centre (payable locally). The journey takes approximately 35-45 minutes and stops at four locations in Bergen. Depending on the express boat departure time, you may have time to explore the city or enjoy a meal at one of the restaurants before embarking on the boat to Lavik. We do recommend spending a night or two in Bergen to visit this charming town before continuing to Lavik for your fjord adventure. The express boat leaves from central Bergen at Strandkaiterminal twice daily in peak summer months, either early in the morning or in the afternoon. The journey takes 2.5 hours to Lavik. When you arrive at Lavik Quay, walk the short distance to Lavik Fjord Hotel located just a minute away. Depending on the arrival time, check-in to your accommodation and get settled in before the evening meal. There may be time to embark on a short hike (map included from the hotel) to explore the area.

Day 2 - Self-guided Cycling trip

The hotel provides mountain bikes for you to use – the cycle routes in the area are perfect for all abilities. There are recommended trips you can take: ride along the north side of the Sognefjord to the village of Leirvik and continue to Hyllestad where you can visit the ancient millstone park and join a guided tour (additional charge). Grind your own flour and bake bread over the fire Viking-style. The route on the south side of the fjord takes you to the unique and quirky Wilderness museum in Massnes, or to Ikkjefjord with many more hiking routes available. The bikes are fitted with 21 gears and bike helmets and visibility vests are available. Note, museum entrance fees payable locally.

Day 3 - Canoeing on Lake Sorestrand

A short transfer takes you to beautiful Lake Sorestrand, just 20 minutes north of Lavik. Enjoy stunning scenery and tranquillity as you paddle along, returning again to the drop off point where you will be met and taken back to the hotel. The whole trip lasts about 3 hours. No previous experience is required and all equipment is provided. There are also several hiking trails in this area if you wish to spend more time exploring.

Day 4 - Leave Sognefjord

Depart Lavik on the express boat to Bergen and depending on the schedule make your way to the airport for your flight by the Flybus coach service (payable locally) The boat departs in the morning at approximately 09.20 (Monday to Saturday), arriving about 11.50. You may wish to spend additional nights in Bergen to explore this wonderful hanseatic city. It is also possible to travel further into the fjords from Lavik by boat and then continuing the journey by train and the famous Flamsbana railway heading back to Bergen.
