4 night itinerary

Day 1: Fly to Helsinki

On arrival make your own way to your hotel (payable locally) for a one-night stay in Finland's Capital. Depending on your flight, spend the afternoon exploring Helsinki.

Day 2: Fly to Kuusamo and transfer to Isokenkäisten Klubi

On arrival in Kuusamo you will transfer to Isokenkäisten Klubi. Transfer to the hotel (approx 40 minutes). This afternoon you will set off by snowshoe to explore the amazing landscape around Klubi. Your guide will provide you with instructions, then you will follow your guide through the snowy forests and over frozen lakes. This evening you can relax at the main building and enjoy a buffet dinner at the Klubi restaurant.

Day 3: Husky Safari and a Russian Feast

After breakfast you are able to try your hand at being a musher! Your guide will show you how to mush our own team of dog through the wilderness. Once on the sled you can really feel and hear the enthusiasm – the huskies really love to run!! The 10 km trail will take you through the forest and frozen lakes. This evening you will be served a Russian Feast! The Russian style of dining is plentiful, long and usually enjoyed with vodka! The Zakuskas play the leading role in the menu. Sirpa and Katja (the owners) will tell you about life and the food traditions close to the border zone. Alongside the delicious food you will experience the authentic Russian-inspired atmosphere.

Day 4: Snowmobile Safari to Kuntivaara and sauna

Experience the breath taking scenery of Kuntivaara! Setting off from Isokenkäisten Klubi, you will pass through vast areas of Kuusamo wilderness. There is plenty of beautiful untouched nature to see. After returning back, it’s Sauna Time! The smoke sauna of Isokenkäisten Klubi is the pride and joy of family Kämäräinen. It takes up to 8 hours to heat, so you’ll have the chance to see how it’s done. The smoke sauna has been awarded with seven stars and offers aromatic heat and well being for its visitors. When it is time for sauna, you will get some turf to pamper your skin with and a dip into the frozen lake will for sure get your Adrenalin to rush!

Day 5: Fly home

After breakfast, say goodbye to Sirpa and Katja and transfer to Kuusamo Airport in time for your flight home.

Experience the breath taking sceneries of Kuntivaara! Setting off from Isokenkäisten Klubi by snowmobile, you will pass through vast areas of Kuusamo wilderness. There is plenty of beautiful untouched nature to see.

Day 4: Lappish cooking and sauna

Today you will spend the day with Sirpa and Katja (the owners). You will visit a Kota, a Lappish tee-pee style hut, resembling the dwellings of the Sámi people when they still lived as nomads. In the Kota the central thing is the open fireplace in the middle. Together with Sirpa and Katja, you will cook a delicious lunch by the fire and learn a lot about local cuisine in between. During your time cooking, you will put a large salmon on the fire and leave it there to cook (for dinner later on). The salmon requires time and careful monitoring, a few strokes of butter and water. This morning you will set off by car to explore the area with a local guide. The first stop will be to a local reindeer farm. The owner will tell you about the life on the farm and you will learn about the reindeer herding. After a short course of the reindeer driving, you will sit on the sleigh and drive a reindeer. This afternoon you will enjoy a 10k husky safari. You will be told how to drive a sled, and after that it is time to meet the athletes! You can really feel and hear the enthusiasm – the huskies really love to run!! The trail will take you through the forest and over frozen lakes. This evening you will have a true Lappish style dinner served to you by Sirpa and Katja.

Day 6: Fly home

After breakfast, say goodbye to Sirpa and Katja and transfer to Kuusamo Airport in time for your flight home.

Today you will be able to experience a favourite past time of the locals; ice fishing. You will be shown how to make a hole in the ice and catch a fish through ice. If you are lucky, you will be able to help your guide prepare and cook your fish over an open fire so you can taste your delicious catch.

Day 7: Snowshoeing at Oulanka National Park and Russian Feast

This morning you will travel by car to Oulanka National Park where you will be shown the art of snowshoeing. With your guide you will set out through the forest towards an old watermill where you will find Kitka River Canyon with its frozen rapids and waterfalls, one of the most stunning places in Kuusamo. Here you will stop for a picnic lunch in a wilderness cabin and keep warm around open fire before heading back to Isokenkäisten Klubi. This evening you will be served a Russian Feast! The Russian style of dining is plentiful, long and usually enjoyed with vodka! The Zakuskas play the leading role in the menu.
