Discover the beauty of Norway’s dramatic coastline combining a classic southbound coastal voyage from Kirkenes to Bergen with a relaxing stay in Lofoten. Travelling aboard one of Havila’s modern and environmentally friendly ships, enjoy comfortable accommodation, exceptional Nordic cuisine, and panoramic views as the ship follows the historic coastal route.
Break the voyage with a stay in the bustling fishing town of Svolvær and explore charming fishing villages, breathtaking fjords, and the iconic landscapes of the Lofoten Islands at your own pace. The stopover itinerary combines the convenience of coastal cruising with the flexibility to spend more time ashore, where you can immerse yourself in local culture and natural wonders.
From September to March keep an eye on the night skies for the elusive aurora borealis – head out on deck or enjoy the warmth of the observation lounge. During the voyage you’ll also have the opportunity to head ashore choosing from the many excursions available.
This celebrated coastal route has been transporting goods, mail and passengers between Bergen and Kirkenes in the far north of Norway for over 130 years. Havila Kystruten are the newest company to operator along Norway’s historic coastal route, introducing a fleet of brand new environmentally-friendly ships in 2022. This combination trip offers a twist to the standard southbound route.
Itinerary
Arrive in Kirkenes and transfer to your hotel for an overnight stay. If time allows perhaps visit the Snowhotel where everything is made of ice and snow.
This morning make your way to the port and board the Havila ship, your home for the next two nights.
The Arctic landscape changes as you sail towards the west and south. The great expanses are replaced by steep peaks, and in the evening sail into Tromsø. Depending on season, you might take a stroll in the midnight sun or keep watch for the northern lights while you explore the city dubbed “The Paris of the North”.
The wild, idyllic Lofoten Islands: beneath the jagged mountains lie white sandy beaches and colourful villages where a vibrant fishing industry thrives. The locals use the coastal ships for everyday trips and transport. If the weather permits, the ship will enter the narrow Trollfjord, where there is a strong possibility of spotting sea eagles. Disembark in Svolvær for a two or three night stay on land.
Choose from a wide range of sightseeing and activities, explore charming fishing villages, breathtaking fjords, and the iconic landscapes of the Lofoten Islands.
Spend the day in Lofoten. This evening, board the Havila ship and continue your voyage southbound towards Stamsund and onwards to Bodø. As evening settles over Lofoten enjoy a three-course dinner in the Havrand Restaurant while the wild and beautiful coastal scenery glides quietly past the panoramic windows.
Cross the Arctic Circle and sail away from the polar night or the sunlit nights. You can still see the northern lights in the winter, and it is never completely dark during the summer nights. Here you sail past a myriad of small islands, islets and skerries and past the special mountain, Torghatten, famous for its natural hole straight through the rock. If you wish, you can also join an excursion to hike up the mountain and walk through the hole.
This morning wake up in historic Trondheim, and for those ending their journey here disembark after breakfast.
The ship continues its journey to Bergen departing Trondheim at 9.30am sailing through the wide Trondheim fjord returning to the coast and the open sea. You can book an excursion to disembark in Kristiansund and be driven along the Atlantic Ocean Road, which has been called the world’s most beautiful drive. The road meanders along islets and skerries, and afterwards you can re-embark in Molde.
The last day of the voyage takes you through a diverse coastal landscape of bare rocky mountains and a maze of sounds and waterways between many islands. The great fjords and glaciers are situated inland. Bergen awaits at the end of the voyage. Explore the iconic wharf of Bryggen, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or take a ride on the Floibanen funicular to the summit of Mount Floyen for views of the Bergen Peninsula.
Make your way to the airport in time for your flight.
