Full description

St Petersburg

Undoubtedly, one of the most beautiful and exotic cities in the world, St Petersburg oozes with rich culture, colourful history, high art and amazing architectural kaleidoscope from Baroque to Soviet style buildings, Neoclassical to Style Moderne . Often referred to as the ‘Venice of the North’ due to the many rivers and canals, St Petersburg is also the cultural centre of Russia and home to the incredible Winter Palace which houses the Hermitage Museum, visit the Mariinsky Opera and Ballet Theatre and the famous Smolny Cathedral. The city has been in the centre of many battles for power from the Tsars of the Royal House of Romanov to the rise of the Bolsheviks and the communist state of Soviet Union. The city’s traditional nicknames of ‘Window to the West’ and ‘Window to Europe’ are still commonly used with the local Russian residents.

Helsinki

In the early 19th century Helsinki became the capital city of Finland and under the rule of the Russian Emperor Alexander I, the new city was commissioned to be built in neoclassical style in order to resemble St Petersburg. Although the history of these two cities has been very much interlinked throughout the centuries, today’s Helsinki also has a strong Nordic identity with modern Scandinavian architecture, famous design shops, art galleries and a typically relaxed Nordic way of life. The many restaurants and bars offer great culinary experiences and during the summer months outdoor living and trips to the archipelago offer a totally new dimension to this beautiful city.

Lappeenranta

Your cruise along the Saimaa canal begins and ends in the city of Lappeenranta, a beautiful lakeside town on the southern shores of Lake Saimaa and just 2-hours by train from Helsinki. Spend 2 nights here, a night before and after your cruise. Visit the old town, a medieaval trading centre, and its many handicraft workshops, quaint cafés and perhaps the Cavalry Museum. Catherine the Great, the Empress of Russia had ordered the fortress to be built in order to protect St Petersburg and more recently, during the WWII, the city has played an important part in the battles between Finland and Russia.
