Overview

This week-long itinerary combines a visit to Russia's historic St Petersburg with time in Finland's vibrant capital city, Helsinki. Travelling on an overnight cruise between the cities allows convenient visa-free entry to Russia where you'll stay for two nights. Explore the elaborate architecture, art and cultural sights of both cities as well as opportunities for boat trips into Helsinki's charming archipelago.

St Petersburg

Undoubtedly, one of the most beautiful and exotic cities in the world, St Petersburg oozes with rich culture, colourful history, high art and amazing architectural kaleidoscope from Baroque to Soviet style buildings, Neoclassical to Style Moderne . Often referred to as the ‘Venice of the North’ due to the many rivers and canals, St Petersburg is also the cultural centre of Russia and home to the incredible Winter Palace which houses the Hermitage Museum, visit the Mariinsky Opera and Ballet Theatre and the famous Smolny Cathedral. The city has been in the centre of many battles for power from the Tsars of the Royal House of Romanov to the rise of the Bolsheviks and the communist state of Soviet Union. The city’s traditional nicknames of ‘Window to the West’ and ‘Window to Europe’ are still commonly used with the local Russian residents.

Included Experiences in St Petersburg

Visit to the Church of our Saviour on the Spilled Blood and St Isaac's, Kazan and Smolny Cathedrals, as well as the Alexander Nevsky Monastery and the St Peter and Paul Fortress.  Tsarskoe Selo, a town 15 miles south of St Petersburg and the former residence of Russian imperial family and visiting nobility. Tsarskoe Selo is a World Heritage Site and forms part of the the town of Pushkin. Visit Catherine Palace and the famous Amber Room and take a walk in the picturesque park. Explore the stunning Hermitage, finest art gallery in Russia and one of the richest and most respected museums in the world.

Helsinki

In the early 19th century Helsinki became the capital city of Finland and under the rule of the Russian Emperor Alexander I, the new city was commissioned to be built in neoclassical style in order to resemble St Petersburg. Although the history of these two cities has been very much interlinked throughout the centuries, today’s Helsinki also has a strong Nordic identity with modern Scandinavian architecture, famous design shops, art galleries and a typically relaxed Nordic way of life. The many restaurants and bars offer great culinary experiences and during the summer months outdoor living and trips to the archipelago offer a totally new dimension to this beautiful city.
