Full description

The journey starts with an overnight stay in Tromso - with a wealth of excellent restaurants, cafes and bars, plenty of shopping opportunities and city attractions, Tromso is a great location for a short stay, whether it’s for 1 night or several.

Then take a direct flight to Kirkenes and spend 2 nights at the Snowhotel, staying in a cosy Gamme Cabin. It is possible to upgrade to one of the amazing Ice Suites to enhance your unique experience. During your time here we have included a King Crab Safari, a must-do activity in this region – help the guides pull up the crab nets, then enjoy one of the most delicious meals you’ve ever had!  Other optional activities include husky sledding; snowmobiling, snowshoeing and a northern lights hunt.

The next part of the tour begins with a pleasant transfer through Arctic landscape, stopping on route at Neiden to see one of the smallest churches in Norway originally built in 1565. Arrive at Tana, home to the Sami family Gaup, where you meet the family of Sami reindeer herders and enjoy a traditional lunch served in a large lavvu around an open fire. Listen to stories and learn about Sami life, culture, handicraft and heritage in authentic surroundings and told by people who are still living in the traditional way. There is time to meet the reindeer and even take a short sled ride.

Continue the journey through the Varanger Peninsula, enjoying untouched Arctic nature at its best on your way to Veines, and its beautiful guesthouse comprising of a cluster of traditional colourful wooden houses lovingly restored by their owner Ase, and situated just a kilometre from the charming fishing village Kongsfjord. This is a magical unspoilt place, instantly providing a calming influence on visitors.

With such a remote location, the ‘sound of silence’ resonates and increases the possibility of spotting the aurora from your doorstep.

The next day Kongsfjord’s unique landscape is in full glory when dressed in daylight, bringing a different but beautiful experience than the previous evening arrival. You have free time to enjoy the tranquillity or choose a guided snowshoe walk around the peninsula (additional charge). In the afternoon take a leisurely walk to the village and visit the local store for coffee and waffles, then to the local art studio and see beautiful handicrafts being made.

No doubt it will be difficult to leave this mesmerising environment; an early transfer takes you back to Kirkenes for the departing flight.

The itinerary is based on 5 nights in total, 1 night in Tromso, 2 nights in Kirkenes and 2 nights at Kongsfjord, with set arrivals on a Wednesday.

Enjoy some time in the city with excellent restaurants and bars to choose from before staying overnight at Hotel Clarion Edge on breakfast basis.

In Tromso there are many attractions such as the Arctic Cathedral; Polaria Arctic aquarium; Polar Museum; cable car to Fjellstua for spectacular views; Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum and even its own brewery. On arrival at Kirkenes, you will be met and transferred to the SnowHotel. In the evening enjoy a 3-course dinner.

Day 3: King Crab Safari

Join a guided King Crab Safari, driving by snowmobile pulled sled to the frozen fjord, where you help pull up the crab pots. The crabs are then prepared by the guides and served in a rustic restaurant by the fjord in the Norwegian way – fresh, steamed and delicious! The afternoon is free to enjoy the snowy surrounds or choose an optional husky or snowmobile tour. After the evening meal, keep watch for the northern lights or choose an aurora hunt by minibus.

Day 4: Meet the Sami and reindeer

A morning transfer first takes you to the small village of Neidun, visiting one of the smallest churches in Norway, originally built in 1565, and also Neidun Chapel built in 1902 in vivid dragon style. Both tell interesting stories about the area. Continue the journey to Tana (journey time 2 hours, plus stops) through beautiful landscapes and arrive at a Sami family’s home, where you’ll have lunch in a large lavvu and listen to stories about the Sami culture and life as a reindeer herder. Meet the tame reindeer and try a short sled ride. The transfer then heads through the Varanger Peninsula with arctic nature at its best to Kongsfjord guesthouse (journey time 90 minutes), where a well-deserved 3-course dinner awaits. Warm up with an optional sauna (additional cost) and check the night skies for the northern lights.

Day 5: Time in Kongsfjord

After breakfast, you have some free time to enjoy the silent nature around the guesthouse or take an optional guided snowshoe walk around the peninsular with far reaching views. Enjoy lunch and afterwards short walk to the town’s local store for some waffles and coffee (not included). Visit a local art studio and meet a lovely Italian couple who produce original handicrafts using reclaimed materials. Time to relax before the evening meal.
