Capital delights

Spend your first and last night in Copenhagen and visit the famous Tivoli Gardens, the colourful canals of Nyhavn and the iconic Little Mermaid of course. It is also possible to extend your stay here. Torshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands, will bring you back in time with its narrow lanes, harbourfront cafes and turf-roofed buildings. A short drive away is the ancient village of Kirkjubour boasting a 900-year-old farmhouse and the ruins of a medieval cathedral provide a fascinating insight into the islands’ history and culture.

Natural wonders of the Faroe Islands

Formed of 18 islands and located in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, the Faroe Islands are still relatively little explored, yet hold so many natural wonders. The fascinating coastal and mountain scenery with high peaks and beautiful waterfalls draw you to explore further. With the backdrop of the surrounding ocean and changing weather and light conditions there are boundless hiking and photo opportunities. The islands are inhabited by less than 50.000 people, but more than 3 million sea birds nest here, making this small group of islands a true birdwatcher’s paradise and of course the puffins will always steal the show in front of the cameras.

Viking heritage

The ancient stories of the ‘islands of the sheep and the paradise of birds’, first attracted the Irish monks, then around the year 800 Norse settlers, the Vikings, arrived. In Sandvagur, a 13th century runestone was discovered, with an inscription of Torkil Onandarson who first settled in the area.

The Faroese Sagas tell many fascinating stories of these early settlers. There is an optional, but highly recommended visit to the Saga Museum in Vestmanna and the National Museum in Torshavn.

Authentic holidays for passionate travellers
With 210 days of rain a year, you may worry this could ruin your photographs but I found the opposite. The way the clouds come over the islands gives it a spooky and dramatic feeling which actually enhanced the photographs!
