On this five-day guided hiking trip, you’ll experience the stunning beauty of Waterton Lakes National Park, known as Canada’s ‘wildflower capital’. Nestled in the southwest corner of the Canadian Rockies, where Alberta’s prairies meet towering peaks, the park borders Montana’s Glacier National Park. Walk through a stunning mix of landscapes, from shimmering lakes and cascading waterfalls to pretty streams, colourful rock formations, and sweeping mountain vistas.
Starting from the shores of Waterton Lake, you’ll head out on trails chosen to show off the park’s most unforgettable views.
Hike up to Summit Lake and Goat Lake for sweeping mountain scenery and a good chance of spotting wildlife. Explore the famous Crypt Lake trail, complete with waterfalls, a tunnel and spectacular views.
Each evening you’ll return to a cosy local lodge, the perfect place to rest and recharge after a full day on the trails.
With a knowledgeable guide leading the way, you’ll make the most of your time here and discover why Waterton is such a special corner of the Rockies.
Itinerary
Make your way to your hotel in downtown Calgary.
After breakfast, your guide will meet you at the hotel and you’ll set off for Waterton. On arrival, enjoy a lunch break before hiking up to Summit Lake. A few switchbacks later, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking mountain views.
Hike: 8 km, 3-4 hours
The first 4 km of this trail is an easy walk to get your legs ready for the switchbacks ahead. The next 3 km climbs more steeply, but you can take your time and enjoy the stunning views as you gain elevation. Keep an eye out for mountain goats along the way, and at the lake, you might spot Cutthroat Trout.
Hike: 13 km, 5-6 hours
Start by crossing Waterton Lake by boat to reach the trailhead for Crypt Lake. The trail winds up from the shoreline through montane forest, past waterfalls, and into Hellroaring Creek Valley – prime bear territory. You’ll climb a ladder and crawl through a 25 m tunnel before reaching the stunning Crypt Lake, sitting at 1,945 m and straddling the US-Canada border. Back in Waterton, enjoy a farewell dinner to celebrate the adventure.
Hike: 17 km, 6-8 hours
After breakfast your trip ends with a transfer back to Calgary.
