Full description

Vatnajokull ice cave tour and glacier walk

Europe's largest glacier, Vatnajokull smothers entire mountains, its ancient ice reaching depths of up to 950m. On day three of this South Iceland adventure you will have a rare opportunity to venture inside the frozen giant on an unforgettable ice cave tour. Led by professional guides, you'll explore a surreal realm of blue ice, carved by summertime meltwater into weird and wonderful shapes and textures. The following day, a glacier walk on Solheimajokull (one of the glaciers flowing from the Myrdalsjokull icecap) provides a totally different perspective – hiking through a crystal maze of ice ridges and crevasses with spectacular views across black-sand plains towards the South Coast.

Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon and other South Coast highlights

Fans of James Bond movies may recognise Jokulsarlon – the iconic glacial lagoon appears in scenes from both A View to a Kill and Die Another Day. The real stars of this extraordinary natural wonder, however, are icebergs – hundreds of them drifting serenely across the coastal lake at the foot of Vatnajokull, or washed up as delicate ice sculptures on a nearby black-sand beach. Other photogenic gems that you will visit along the South Coast include the horsetail-plume Seljalandsfoss and mighty Skogafoss – both waterfalls offer spray-kissed, close-up encounters.

The Golden Circle and aurora hunting

Winter adds a certain magic to the Golden Circle – Southwest Iceland's famous trio of highlights. Steam from Geysir's hot springs glows in low, golden sunlight; Strokkur erupting in a 20m-tall fountain of scalding water every 8-10 minutes. At Gullfoss, the twin cascades switchback through gorges encrusted with ice, while at Thingvellir the rugged landscape of gorges and pools (marking the rift between Eurasian and North American plates) can look particularly beautiful dusted in snow. Winter, of course, is also the time for aurora hunting. This trip includes two nights at a country hotel in the Skaftafell area, far from city light pollution that could spoil your chances of a sighting.
