Overview

Finland is home to around 188,000 lakes and the south east, where you'll find most of them is referred to, unsurprisingly, as Lakeland. Unspoiled nature and abundant wildlife offer many opportunities for hikes, activities and unexpected experiences and, being just a stone's throw away from Russia, there are many reminders of the region's colourful and fascinating past.

The south-eastern region is considered to be some of the most beautiful in Finland. Dotted with thousands of lakes, this sparsely populated area also has numerous national parks and waterways. Boasting the largest lake in Finland, Saimaa, here you are never far from water based activities, making this holiday as relaxed or active as you wish.

The ancient taiga forest and national parks offer excellent hiking and wildlife spotting opportunities - capercaillie, moose, lynx, reindeer and even wolves roam free. After an action packed day, take a relaxing sauna or refreshing dip in the lake. Accommodation options range from a luxury villa, a comfortable city hotel to a more traditional stay in a medieval town.

Day 6 Porvoo - Helsinki

One of Finland's six medieval towns, the old town with its maze of streets is a highlight and parts date back to the Middle Ages. In 1809 Finland was annexed to the Russian Empire as an autonomous Grand Duchy and Tsar Alexander I ordered the first Diet of Finland to be convened in Porvoo. The buildings in which the Diet of Porvoo was held are still standing, as is the house where the Tsar and his entourage were accommodated. Back to the present day, the boutiques, restaurants and cafes located in the centre of the town are delightful. In the afternoon continue the drive to Helsinki. Return the car to the city office and make your way to the central hotel for a two-night stay.
