Day 3: Kajaani

Explore the scenic surrounds, swim in the lake or enjoy a treatment at the Wellness Centre at the hotel.

Head south, visiting Hiidenportti National Park with its scenic gorge on the way, to Lake Pielinen, the fifth largest in Finland. Stay in Nurmes or Koli for 3 nights at Sokos Hotel Koli.

Day 5: Koli

One of Finland's best known national landscapes, Koli has rare geological features, a versatile array of animal species and an abundance of plant species.

Day 6: Koli

Perhaps venture closer to the Russian border or enjoy white water rafting at Runaa Rapids.

Day 7: Kuopio

Head westbound along the famous 'Blue Road', explore the extensive Puijo ridge hiking trails, one of the country's first nature conservation areas established over 100 years ago. Visit Puijo tower and the revolving restaurant for amazing lake views. Spend 2 nights at Countryhote Eevantalo or Sokos Hotel Puijonsarvi.

Day 8: Kuopio

Enjoy the day at leisure - take part in various activities or visit the atmospheric 100 year old traditional market with its fresh farm produce, beautiful handicrafts and mouth-watering local specialties.

Day 9: Savonia

Travel south to visit the charming town of Savonlinna, sprawled over several interlinked islands and the spectacular medieval castle of Olavinlinna, where the famous annual opera festival is held in July. Stay for 2 nights at Anttolan Hovi or Tertinkartano.

Day 10: Savonia

Relax at your accommodation and enjoy the tranquil Lake Saimaa. Go swimming, canoeing, kayaking or try a more traditional rowing boat.

Day 12: Porvoo

One of Finland's six medieval towns, the old town with its maze of streets is a highlight and parts date back to the Middle Ages. In 1809 Finland was annexed to the Russian Empire as an autonomous Grand Duchy and Czar Alexander I ordered the first Diet of Finland to be convened in Porvoo. The buildings in which the Diet of Porvoo was held are still standing, as is the house where the Czar and his entourage were accommodated. Back to the present day, the boutiques, restaurants and cafes located in the centre of the town are delightful.
