The ancient taiga forest and national parks offer excellent hiking and wildlife spotting opportunities - capercaillie, moose, lynx, reindeer and even wolves roam free. After an action packed day, take a relaxing sauna or refreshing dip in the lake. Accommodation options range from a luxury villa, a comfortable city hotel to a more traditional stay in a medieval town.

Authentic holidays for passionate travellers
Finland is a beautiful country not only in the winter but also in the summer. While driving around, there are so many stunning lakes as well as an abundance of wildlife. It is actually quite common to see a herd of reindeers sharing the same road as you!

Itinerary & Accommodation

Tailor-make your holiday with us

The itinerary shown is an example of this self-drive holiday. We have many other hotels and route recommendations which can be tailored to your requirements. Please discuss with our Travel Specialists who can put together a bespoke itinerary for you.

Day 1: Fly to Kuopio

Collect the rental vehicle and drive the short distance to Kuopio centre and check in to Sokos Hotel Puijonsarvi for a 2 night stay.

Day 2: Kuopio

Explore the extensive Puijo ridge hiking trails, one of the country's first nature conservation areas established over 100 years ago. Visit Puijo tower and the revolving restaurant for amazing lake views; enjoy the day at leisure - take part in various activities or visit the atmospheric 100 year old traditional market with its fresh farm produce, beautiful handicrafts and mouth-watering local specialities.

Day 3: Kuopio to Savonia

Travel south to visit the charming town of Savonlinna, sprawled over several interlinked islands and the spectacular medieval castle of Olavinlinna, where the famous annual opera festival is held in July. Stay for 2 nights at Anttolanhovi Hotel. Driving time approximately 2 hours 15 minutes.

Day 4: Savonia

Relax at your accommodation and enjoy the tranquil Lake Saimaa. Go swimming, canoeing, kayaking or try a more traditional rowing boat.

Day 5: Savonia to Porvoo

Drive further south, visit the Repovesi National Park and the Arboretum Mustila, especially famous for its rhododendrons and azaleas in June, and it's glorious riot of colours in the autumn. Continue to Porvoo for a 1 night stay at Hotel Pariisin Ville. Driving time approximately 2 hours 45 minutes.

Day 6: Porvoo to Helsinki

One of Finland's six medieval towns, the old town with its maze of streets is a highlight and parts date back to the Middle Ages. In 1809 Finland was annexed to the Russian Empire as an autonomous Grand Duchy and Czar Alexander I ordered the first Diet of Finland to be convened in Porvoo. The buildings in which the Diet of Porvoo was held are still standing, as is the house where the Czar and his entourage were accommodated. Back to the present day, the boutiques, restaurants and cafes located in the centre of the town are delightful. In the afternoon continue the drive to Helsinki. Driving time approximately 1 hour. Return the car to the city office and make your way to the central hotel for a 2 night stay.

Day 7: Helsinki

Enjoy the many sights of the capital, famous for its Neoclassical architecture mixed with modern Scandinavian design, by foot or by tram. The city is especially lively in the summer with many outdoor markets, cafes and bars scattered around the town and nearby islands. There are numerous art galleries, museums, historical churches, botanic gardens and much more to discover. For a complete change of scenery, take a day trip to Tallinn with just a 2 hour ferry crossing.

Day 8: Depart Helsinki

Depart for Helsinki Airport (payable locally) by airport coach or train for your return flight home.
