Full description

Maria Island has had a colourful history, originally home to the Tyreddeme Aboriginal people who lived here for thousands of years prior to the arrival of 19th century European explorers. The island was subsequently used by sealers and whalers, then became a significant penal settlement before enjoying an industrial boom in the late 19th century.

Today it is a national park in its entirety, with no permanent human population. As such, the wildlife of the island has become increasingly abundant, and during your walk you should see Tasmanian kangaroos, wallabies, wombats and echidnas. The unique birdlife includes the endangered forty spotted pardalote, Cape Barren geese (the world’s second rarest breed), eagles and numerous sea bird species. The crystal clear waters include protected marine reserves home to fish, dolphins, seals and migrating whales.

The Maria Island Walk is the perfect way to immerse yourself in the island’s natural beauty. With a maximum of 10 walkers per group, and accompanied by experienced and knowledgeable guides, each day’s walking ends with a candlelit gourmet meal of fresh local produce, complemented by some of Tasmania’s finest wines.

Accommodation is included at two wilderness camps, situated amongst beautiful bush and only a stone's throw from the beach. With the sounds of the bush and a warm comfortable bed, a good night’s sleep is assured. On the last night you will enjoy an authentic colonial experience, staying in the beautifully restored and heritage-listed home of Diego Bernacchi.

Itinerary & Accommodation

Itinerary & Accommodation

Day 1: Hobart - Casuarina (8km walking)

Today is an early morning start. After your 8am hotel pickup, gear issue and briefing you will drive to the coast and take a marine adventure in a private catamaran to the remote southern end of Maria Island. Enjoy lunch overlooking the crystal azure waters of Shoal Bay before taking a walk to Casuarina Beach camp. There is time for an afternoon stroll through the tall eucalypt forest to visit a penguin colony at Haunted Bay before enjoying a candlelit dinner.

Day 2: Casuarina - White Gums Camp (13km walking)

Start your journey along five beautiful beaches. Watch for dolphins in the surf and wedgetail and sea eagles soaring overhead, explore world heritage convict era cells and a rare Tasmanian Aborigine ochre site at Bloodstone Point as you walk to White Gums camp. Enjoy lunch at a secluded place along the way. Arrive at White Gums camp and enjoy a refreshing swim before retiring for another evening of gourmet dining. This is prime habitat for catching a glimpse of the endangered 40 spotted Pardalote bird. Walking distance today is 13 kilometres on flat, hard sand beaches and well worn trails.

Day 3: White Gums Camp - Darlington (9-17km walking)

Several options are available today. Choose to travel through magnificent 'cloud forest' to the breathtaking 709 metre summit of Mt Maria. Alternatively, choose a gentler option and head inland to the heart of the island through the ancient forests full of bird life to visit Hopgrounds Beach and the Painted Cliffs before arriving at the world heritage penal colony of Darlington. From Darlington you may wish to climb the summit of Bishop and Clerk. Enjoy lunch along the way. Finish the day in Darlington with accommodation in the historic colonial home once occupied by Italian entrepreneur, Diego Bernacchi.

Day 4: Darlington - Hobart (4km walking)

The final day begins with walking around the northern tip of Maria Island. The walk takes you through a variety of spectacular woodlands and forests with rare endemic birds, wallabies and wombats on show. Continue to the dramatic sea cliffs of Fossil Bay and then head down to the remarkable fossils at Fossil Cliffs. Arriving back at Darlington, enjoy lunch before boarding the boat back to the mainland and Hobart taking with you incredible memories and stories of an amazing four days spent in a very special place. Tour concludes in Hobart at approximately 5.00pm, at which time hotel drop offs will commence.
