Overview

Combine a stay at Swedish Lapland’s legendary Icehotel with Abisko National Park – rated by Lonely Planet as the best place in the world for experiencing the northern lights. As well as a visit to the Aurora Sky Station, this superb short break also has plenty of opportunities for trying exciting winter activities like husky sledding, snowmobiling, ice-sculpting and Nordic skiing.

Aurora watching in Abisko

On this three night winter break you’ll spend one night at SFT Abisko Turistation, the only hotel in the national park. The Abisko National Park offers excellent Northern Light viewing opportunities with a stunning 360° lake and mountain landscape and vast open skies. Framed by the striking Lapporten mountain valley, the icon of the national park, it is an ideal location for walking and photography. It is also a short walk from the chairlift that whisks you up to the Aurora Sky Station. Once at the summit, large balconies provide a perfect vantage for northern lights watching. Inside the Sky Station there’s a cosy log fire and, as an optional extra, we can arrange for you to enjoy a dinner of delicious home-cooked Swedish cuisine.

Stay at the famous Icehotel

Your holiday also includes two nights at the Icehotel. One of these will be ‘sleeping on ice’, tucked up in thermal sleeping bags on thick mattresses. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience – many guests claim to have their best night’s sleep ever! You will also have plenty of time to explore the Icehotel, marvelling at the stunning ice sculptures and enjoying a drink at the Icebar. Your remaining night will be spent in nearby chalet-style ‘warm’ accommodation.

Itinerary

On arrival in Kiruna transfer to the SFT Abisko Turistation (journey time 90 minutes) for an overnight stay. After dinner take a 15 minute walk* to the base of the mountain, where you’ll be kitted out in warm clothing before a 20-minute ride on a chairlift to the Aurora Sky Station. Here you can learn more about the northern lights and hopefully spend time enjoying this amazing natural phenomenon before returning to your hotel.

This inspiring and ‘cool’ hotel has to be seen to be believed! Combining engineering know-how with supreme design flare, it is created each winter then left to melt back into the River Torne in late April.

From the moment you step inside the door, you’ll understand why this hotel is famous the world over. From its hallways lined with ice art and glittering chandeliers, to the atmospheric ice bar, you’ll be swept away by the magic.
