Northern lights watching at Hotel Ork

Located around 100km from Keflavik Airport, Hotel Ork is your base for three of the four nights on this winter self-drive holiday. This is ‘big sky’ country, with just a short walk from the hotel there is no artificial light pollution to spoil your chances of witnessing the northern lights. The staff are on hand to give you the best possible advice on aurora hunting, as well as exploring the highlights of the local area.

Highlights of the Golden Circle

Spend a full day exploring Iceland’s captivating Golden Circle, famous for its extraordinary concentration of natural wonders: the magnificent twin-tiered waterfall of Gullfoss cascading into an ice-fringed gorge, Geysir’s impressive (and regular) Strokkur fountain geyser and Thingvellir’s continental rift.

Exploring the South Coast

You will also have a full day to roam the spectacular South Coast. Start by visiting two beautiful waterfalls: the delicate horsetail plume of Seljalandsfoss and the perfect curtain of white water at Skogafoss. Don’t miss the Eyjafjallajokull Visitor Centre – a fascinating insight into how a local farm coped with the 2010 volcanic eruption. You can also visit Solheimajokull – a glacier that extends from the Myrdalsjokull icecap (optional glacier walks are available). Iceland’s coast, meanwhile, is famous for its black-sand beaches, and the South has stunning examples at Reynisfjara and Vik.

Reykjavik is a place with much to offer. With its charming architecture, buzzing cultural scene, world class restaurants, as assortment of museums and galleries, complemented by a number of iconic tourist sites, it has something for everyone.
