Day 1 Dunedin - Catlins (125 km - Average driving time is 2.5 hours)

Hidden in the east coast of Southland, The Catlins provide a myriad of adventures, from unspoilt beaches to towering cliffs, ancient forests and natural wonders. Admire the dolphins frolicking in the waves and watch seals basking on the rocks. Spend your day exploring this area of natural wonder. With plenty of walking tracks and unspoilt areas of natural beauty, you will be sure to see some of New Zealand's most stunning scenery. Optional excursions include a trip to Tokata Lighthouse at Nugget Point - a breeding area for yellow-eyed penguins, or a walk around the peaceful Lake Wilkie. Alternatively visit McLean Falls or Jacks Blowhole 200m from the sea.

Day 2 Catlins - Invercargill - Bluff - Stewart Island (105 km - Average driving time is 2 hours)

Continue to explore the scenery of The Catlins coastline as you journey to Invercargill airport. Park your rental vehicle and board the express catamaran to Bluff (included), which takes approximately 30 mins. Cross Foveaux Strait to Stewart Island (1 hour) and en route watch out for wildlife and seabirds. Stewart Island, the smallest of New Zealand's three main islands, offers a remarkably unique experience. Enjoy the slower pace of life and spend your time in Rakiura National Park, wildlife watching and enjoying the fascinating native flora and fauna.

Day 3 Stewart Island

Travel by coach from Oban to Lee Bay at the entrance to Rakiura National Park and complete the first section of one of "New Zealand's Great Walks" (included) which takes approximately 2 hours, ending at Maori Beach, the site of a 1913 timber mill. Continue for another 1.5 hours and you will reach Port William. It is here that you will learn about early Maori history and life on the island exploring the first police station, sealing and whaling bases and many more sights of interest. After a picnic lunch in Port William (included), take a water taxi on the calm coastal waters back to Halfmoon Bay. Make your way to the Bunkhouse Theatre in Oban to watch a short film about the 'why' and 'how' of Stewart Island - "A Local's Tail".

Day 4 Stewart Island - Invercargill

Fly back to Stewart Island and collect your rental car from the airport. Take a short drive to Transport World (flight and museum entry included). This museum has one of the largest transport collections in the world. After lunch make your way to your accommodation before your afternoon tour (included). Explore Invercargill's treasures and try some of the iconic food and drinks on offer in this area of Southland. Optional activities include exploring Invercargill Brewery, an award winning beer and cider brewers or enjoy some "Bluff Oysters" a delicacy of the region.

Day 5 Invercargill - Te Anau (187 km - Average driving time is 3 hours)

Explore the dramatic scenery and sights of the Southern Ocean and Western Southland as the road hugs the coast. Explore Riverton, one of the oldest towns in Southland, renowned for its scenic walks and safe swimming beaches. Drive round to the "rocks" and you will have great views of Stewart Island. A little further round the coast is Colac Bay, home to some of the best surfing in the south. Explore Monkey Island at low tide and enjoy the uncrowded beaches, perfect for horse riding, motorbiking and kite bugging. Head to McCrackens Rest on the Southern Scenic Route overlooking Te Wae Wae Bay for spectacular views before heading to Clifden Caves to explore the remarkable limestone caves there.
