Full description

Easily accessible and yet offering a true sense of remoteness, Spitsbergen is the largest island of the Svalbard archipelago. Even with only a brief foray into the icy wilderness you may see polar bears, reindeer, walrus and belugas, as well as a huge variety of seabirds including skua, Arctic terns and snow buntings.

For the more active there is a chance to enjoy sea-kayaking (additional cost, selected departures only, must be pre-booked) - a truly magical way to experience this unique environment, especially if you are lucky enough to paddle with seals, walrus or even beluga whales.

Notes

  • All voyage itineraries are intended as a guideline only - embracing the unexpected is part of the legacy of expedition travel. Actual routes and landings will be dependent on weather, sea and ice conditions. A degree of flexibility is essential in the polar regions!
  • The above sample itinerary is based on the 11-day voyage on the Ocean Nova. Other departures may vary in duration and routing, please contact us for specific details.

Join Polar Explorer Felicity Aston on a one-off special departure!

Sea Spirit: 13 June 2019

In 2012, British Polar Explorer Felicity Aston became the first person in the world to ski alone across Antarctica, using just muscle power (no kites or machines). The journey of 1744 km took her 59 days and gave her a place in the book of Guinness World Records. More than a decade previously, her first journey to Antarctica was as a meteorologist with the British Antarctic Survey to monitor climate and ozone. She went on to complete numerous journeys in Antarctica and other cold regions of the world including Greenland and Siberia.

Felicity regularly speaks to a variety of audiences around the world about her expedition experiences as well as more generally about Polar Science, Antarctica and Meteorology, and has written three books about the polar regions which have been translated into several languages. Felicity was appointed MBE in 2015 for services to Polar Exploration and in the same year was awarded the Queen’s Polar Medal – one of only 10 women ever to have been recognised in this way.

Felicity will be on board the Sea Spirit for the 13 June sailing along Spitsbergen's west coast, and will be happy to share tales of her past adventures with you and enjoy a very special new adventure with you as you discover the highlights of Spitsbergen together.
