Full description

Easily accessible and yet offering a true sense of remoteness, Spitsbergen is the largest island of the Svalbard archipelago. Even with only a brief foray into the icy wilderness you may see polar bears, reindeer, walrus and belugas, as well as a huge variety of seabirds including skua, Arctic terns and snow buntings.

For the more active there is a chance to enjoy sea-kayaking (additional cost, selected departures only, must be pre-booked) - a truly magical way to experience this unique environment, especially if you are lucky enough to paddle with seals, walrus or even beluga whales.

Itinerary & Vessels

Itinerary & Vessels

Day 1: embarkation, Longyearbyen

Board your ship in Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen's largest settlement.

Days 2-10: West & North Spitsbergen

Over the next few days your expedition team will take advantage of local ice and weather conditions to explore the highlights of western Spitsbergen, as well as aiming to visit some of the northern outlying islands. Highlights may include a Zodiac cruise along the face of the 14th of July glacier, searching for Arctic foxes, barnacle geese and more on shore, or marvelling at the thousands of seabirds that nest on the towering rock face of Alkhornet. Conditions permitting you may reach the northern island of Phippsoya, a favourite spot for walrus.

Day 11: disembarkation, Longyearbyen

Your adventure ends as it began, in the frontier-style settlement of Longyearbyen.

Notes

  • All voyage itineraries are intended as a guideline only - embracing the unexpected is part of the legacy of expedition travel. Actual routes and landings will be dependent on weather, sea and ice conditions. A degree of flexibility is essential in the polar regions!
  • The above sample itinerary is based on the 11-day voyage on the Ocean Nova. Other departures may vary in duration and routing, please contact us for specific details.
