Full description

Svalbard is a difficult place to visualise unless you have actually been there and only then, can you begin to understand what makes it tick. That is especially true during the polar night and aurora season. This is a unique place and should be on everybody’s bucket list. Our short break gives you a taste of what you can do, and there are plenty of other options should you wish to extend your stay and fully immerse yourself in the Svalbard experience.

Travelling options to Svalbard can be limited so we have included an overnight stay in Tromso on the Norwegian mainland the first night, allowing a better choice of flights the following day. It is also possible to fly to Oslo and stay overnight in Norway's capital before continuing the following day to Svalbard.

Svalbard is an archipelago in the Arctic Ocean, about midway between the mainland of Norway and the North Pole. Spitsbergen is the largest of these islands and Longyearbyen is the main settlement, in fact the northernmost city in the world and the primary base for your stay. Situated 350km above the Arctic Circle, this fascinating city is the perfect place to get acclimatised to polar conditions and is well worth exploring.

Longyearbyen used to be a mining community, everywhere in town you can see traces of its heritage – from the memorial by the church to the wooden scaffolds that once carried buckets of coal through the valley. Now it has become a small but functional town with a hospital, university, post office, supermarket and even the world’s most northerly brewery and chocolatier. Tourism has transformed the town into an Arctic adventurer’s gateway. As well as high quality accommodation there are more authentic places to stay like Basecamp Hotel as well as a surprisingly good selection of cafes, coffee shops, restaurants and shops throughout the town.

Trappers Station

Situated a short distance from the town and away from city lights, Trapper’s Station is home to nearly a hundred Alaskan huskies, all eager to welcome you to their patch. The cabin is warm and inviting, where hot meals are served and stories told about the history of the trappers on Spitsbergen, and the fascinating lives they lead. With very little light pollution, there is good chance to catch a display of the northern lights if the sky is clear – stay up and keep watch for the aurora or head for the heated wooden tepee and a good nights' sleep on reindeer skins in cosy sleeping bags. There is no running water or showers, but the outdoor toilet will be heated for comfort. Accommodation is on a shared basis in the cabin, with a maximum of 10 persons.

Wilderness adventures

The wilderness awaits outside of town taking advantage of the silent darkness with two outdoor pursuits included – if the snow conditions are right, help harness the dogs for a thrilling sled trip into the Bolter valley. The following day, don snowshoes and after a brief lesson, head out of town enjoying the great view of Advent valley.
