Itinerary & Vessel

Itinerary & Vessel

Day 1: Arrive in Oslo

Arrive at your hotel, where you can meet your fellow passengers. Oslo, the capital city, offers plenty of museums, restaurants and open spaces to explore.

Days 2: Depart Oslo for embarkation in Longyearbyen

This morning you will be transferred to the airport where you will board your charter flight to Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen’s largest settlement. You will have time to explore the town before embarkation. As the ship sets sail, enjoy your first view of the island’s rugged, glacier-topped mountains rising majestically from the icy waters.

Days 3-6: Spitsbergen

Spitsbergen, the largest island in the Svalbard archipelago, is home to numerous varieties of wildlife and stunning natural beauty. Visit spectacular glaciers and steep-walled fjords with the possibility of seeing walrus, reindeer and the elusive polar bear. In the sky, keep an eye out for arctic terns, skuas, long-tailed ducks, kittiwakes and ivory gulls.

Days 7-8: At Sea

As you sail towards the island of Jan Mayen, the expedition team will keep you busy with presentations about the storied history, wildlife, geology, ecology, politics and climate of the area.

Days 9-10: Jan Mayen

280 miles from Greenland, 340 miles from Iceland and north of the Arctic Circle you will find the isolated island of Jan Mayen hidden deep in the North Atlantic. Usually covered in a blanket of fog, this small mountainous island was declared a nature reserve in 2010 and has just 18 rotating inhabitants who all work for the Norwegian military or Norwegian Meteorological Institute.

Days 11-15: Scoresbysund, Greenland

Scoresbysund, the largest, deepest and to many, the most beautiful fjord system in the world is the perfect area to be explored by Zodiac. As well as the amazing scenery, you will have the chance to explore the ancient Thule settlements, meet the locals and gain an understanding of their way of life in Ittoqqortoormiit, Greenland’s most remote community.

Days 16-17: At Sea

Heading south over the Denmark Strait towards Iceland, enjoy a presentation, share your photos, or watch a film.

Day 18: Disembark and depart Reykjavik, Iceland

You will disembark in Reykjavik at the end of your journey. If you have booked post-expedition accommodation a transfer will be provided to take you to your central downtown location.

  • The above sample itinerary is based on the 18 day voyage on the Ocean Adventurer. Other departures may vary in duration and routing, ie alternative embarkation or disembarkation ports, or do not include the pre-voyage hotel night. Please contact us for specific details.
  • All voyage itineraries are intended as a guideline only - embracing the unexpected is part of the legacy of expedition travel. Actual routes and landings will be dependent on weather, sea and ice conditions. A degree of flexibility is essential in the polar regions!
