Itinerary & Accommodation
Itinerary & Accommodation
Make your own way to the Tok Tokkie Trails base on the edge of the NamibRand Nature Reserve, where you will be welcomed with some light refreshments. Here you will be provided with a small daypack which you will carry with you, whilst your main luggage will be transferred to your overnight camp. Following a short scenic drive your adventure on the Tok Tokkie Trail begins. You will walk past mysterious fairy circles and across rolling sand dunes to reach your first overnight camp. On arrival relax with a sundowner and enjoy the views whilst dinner is prepared. Your first night in the desert will be unforgettable, with the chance to appreciate the one of the world’s few International Dark Sky Reserves stretching out above you.
A pre-dawn wake up call allows you to set off in the cool of the early morning, fuelled by a hot drink and light breakfast. Your guide will encourage you to feel, smell, taste and see the oldest living desert in the world awaken as you make your way past spectacular dunes and plains. Scour the sand for tell-tale signs of life; with the guide’s experienced eyes you may discover elusive desert species such as the golden mole, dancing white lady spider, barking gecko, dune lark and flightless wasp. Larger animals you might come across include bat-eared fox, oryx, springbok and ostrich. During the course of the day your guide will explain some wonders of the Namib to you - how the fascinating desert flora survives, how insect and reptile life adapts to the harsh environment and how mammals can survive here without water. This morning’s 4-4.5 hour hike will ascend over a mountain saddle before descending to a dry riverbed. Lunch will be provided at a shady spot, with time to relax and take a siesta during the hottest part of the day. Later continue your trek over the dunes against a backdrop of mountain scenery for a further 2-2.5 hours to reach your second overnight camp, where a sundowner and delicious dinner await. Kick back and listen out for the sound of barking geckos, owls or just the deafening silence of the desert.
Once again you are woken in the soft light shortly before sunrise. Breakfast is served before you head off through the dune field. The soft and rolling dunes are interspersed by camel thorn trees, which provide welcome shade for a rest. Today’s easy walk will end at the Tok Tokkie farmhouse by late morning. If time permits you may visit the Namib Desert Environmental Education Trust (NaDEET), a non-profit, donor sponsored trust, which aims to develop environmentally responsible citizens of Namibia. Bid farewell to your fellow hikers and depart.
On the trail you will be sleeping outdoors on stretcher beds in a bedroll. All meals will also be served in the open air. Under exceptional circumstances (e.g. inclement weather) tents may be provided for sleeping, this will be at the discretion of the guide.
Bathroom facilities comprise a long-drop toilet, bucket shower and a hand basin at the overnight camps. Fresh water for drinking (from a borehole) will be available at the lunch spot and overnight camps. It is essential that you stay hydrated so do fill up your water bottles when you can.
There are no electrical supplies on the trail for charging batteries, so please ensure you carry a spare for your camera etc.
