Full description

Tromso is blessed with a wonderful location; the main part of the town is built on an island, to the east are the snow-capped Lyngen Alps which rise to 1800 metres and beautiful Lyngenfjord, the Atlantic lies to the west and countless smaller islands and fjords are close by. You can't fail to be captivated by the great outdoors here with a wealth of activities available during the winter months.

As a gateway to the Arctic, in days gone by Tromso was the departure point for expeditions to the North Pole, whalers in Arctic waters and trappers off to Greenland and further afield.

Today, as a university town it has a vibrant atmosphere with a population of nearly 70,000 people. It is a leader in Arctic research and is home to the largest collection of historic wooden buildings in Northern Norway, including boutiques, lively cafes, restaurants, museums, churches and galleries. The many museums and art galleries exhibit arts and crafts inspired by Arctic nature and Sami culture, as well as research into the northern lights.

It has become increasingly popular as a winter destination for northern light holidays, and as such, has a wide selection of good quality hotels to choose from. There are also many exciting activities on offer which include dog sledding, snowmobile safaris, snowshoe excursions, reindeer safaris, whale watching and several evening excursions to search for the amazing aurora.

In our 3 night short break we have included a nothern lights search - taking you to local hot spots in search for the aurora and ending at a wilderness camp to warm up in front of an open fire and to cook some snacks and have hot drinks.
