Overview

Ideal for a northern light short break, the beautiful and lively city of Tromso is steeped in history and known as the ‘Paris of the North’ with its wealth of shops, restaurants and street cafes. Located 230 miles above the Arctic Circle, it is a great base to go in search for the aurora, as well as take part in many winter activities.

Tromso is blessed with a wonderful location; the main part of the town is built on an island, to the east are the snow-capped Lyngen Alps which rise to 1800 metres and beautiful Lyngenfjord, the Atlantic lies to the west and countless smaller islands and fjords are close by. You can’t fail to be captivated by the great outdoors here with a wealth of activities available during the winter months.

As a gateway to the Arctic, in days gone by Tromso was the departure point for expeditions to the North Pole, whalers in Arctic waters and trappers off to Greenland and further afield.

Today, as a university town it has a vibrant atmosphere with a population of nearly 70,000 people. It is a leader in Arctic research and is home to the largest collection of historic wooden buildings in Northern Norway, including boutiques, lively cafes, restaurants, museums, churches and galleries. The many museums and art galleries exhibit arts and crafts inspired by Arctic nature and Sami culture, as well as research into the northern lights.

There are a wide selection of excursions on offer as well as many in pursuit of the northern lights for which the city has become well known.

In this 3-night short break we have included a northern lights search – taking you to local hot spots in search for the aurora and ending at a wilderness camp to warm up in front of an open fire and to cook some snacks and have hot drinks.

Itinerary

Transfer by the airport shuttle bus or taxi to your hotel in the city (payable locally) and stay for 3 nights at your chosen hotel on breakfast basis.

Time to explore this unique city, visit one of the attractions or take part in an excursion or two! On one of the evenings you will head out of town in search for the northern lights with the famous Guide Gunnar, on this small group tour you will enjoy some traditional snacks around the camp fire and a presentation on the history of the aurora and hopefully see the famous Aurora Borealis
