Overview

This Alaskan rail adventure combines scenic rail journeys, incredible wildlife encounters and the state’s most iconic landscapes.

Begin in Anchorage and travel aboard the Alaskan Railroad in the Goldstar railcar, taking in panoramic views of glaciers, waterfalls and rugged coastline before arriving in Seward for a spectacular Kenai Fjords cruise where humpback whales, sea otters, puffins, and porpoises thrive.

Experience one of Alaska’s most unforgettable highlights, a floatplane bear‑viewing excursion that brings you to remote wilderness to observe brown and black bears in their natural habitat.

The journey continues to Talkeetna and Denali National Park, offering open‑air viewing and onboard commentary as the landscapes shift from forests to towering peaks. With time to explore quirky Talkeetna and the vast wilderness of Denali, this tour delivers a perfect blend of adventure, scenery and world‑class Alaska experiences.

Itinerary

On arrival transfer to your hotel and, time permitting, enjoy the sights of Anchorage.

Board the Coastal Classic Train in the Goldstar Railcar for a breathtaking journey along Cook Inlet and into the glacier‑carved Chugach Mountains en route to Seward. On arrival, transfer to the small boat harbour for a six‑hour Kenai Fjords National Park cruise, renowned for its abundant wildlife, alpine and tidewater glaciers and dramatic scenery. As you explore Resurrection Bay, watch for Steller sea lions, seals, puffins, eagles and whales. Continue to either Holgate or Aialik Glacier, where your captain will pause so you can hear the glacier groan and possibly witness ice calving into the sea. Enjoy lunch onboard.

Today you can personalise your adventure with a choice of exciting excursions. Perhaps explore Resurrection Bay by sea kayak on the Tonsina Point adventure, surrounded by snow‑capped mountains and pristine coastal scenery or enjoy a relaxed Bear Lake kayak or canoe trip, where calm waters, salmon viewing and the chance to spot eagles and even bears make for a serene outdoor experience. Keen hikers can choose the Exit Glacier Hike, offering up‑close views of one of the most accessible glaciers from the Harding Icefield.

Upgrade options offer even more adventure. Try guided walking salmon fishing along scenic rivers or paddle among towering icebergs on the Bear Glacier Iceberg Kayaking tour. An optional helicopter flight with glacier landing provides breathtaking aerial views and time to explore a remote beach beside a calving glacier.

This morning, depart on a private transfer to Whittier, travelling through the famous Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, the longest one‑lane highway tunnel in North America, shared with the Alaska Railroad. In Whittier, board the 26 Glacier Cruise to explore the stunning Prince William Sound, where you’ll encounter 26 named glaciers and many more hidden ice giants. Enjoy close‑up views of towering blue ice and listen for the deep echoes of moving glaciers, with lunch served onboard. After returning to Whittier, step aboard the Alaska Railroad’s Glacier Discovery Train for a scenic journey back to Anchorage.

Experience an unforgettable half‑day adventure as you fly by floatplane from Anchorage to one of Alaska’s premier bear‑viewing areas, such as Redoubt Bay, Katmai, Lake Clark, or Chinitna Bay, depending on seasonal bear activity. After a scenic flight over wild landscapes enjoy the rare opportunity to observe black and brown bears up close as they fish, forage and interact in their natural habitat.

Depart early on the Denali Star Train in the Goldstar Railcar (breakfast included onboard) to Talkeetna, a charming base camp town famed for its views of Mount Denali. Enjoy a stroll along the historic main street with river vistas and inviting cafés. In the afternoon, take to the skies on a small‑group flightseeing tour, soaring over rivers, valleys and glaciers before landing to experience walking on a glacier firsthand.

This morning board back on the Denali Star and enjoy the comfort and panoramic views of the Goldstar Railcar as you travel to Denali National Park. Upon arrival, your afternoon is free for optional adventures, including whitewater rafting on the Nenana River, helicopter flightseeing, glacier landings or scenic hikes in the surrounding wilderness. Lunch is served onboard the train.

Today, tailor your Denali experience with a choice of excursions. Choose the Denali Highway Jeep Excursion, a guided self‑drive 4×4 journey along one of National Geographic Traveller’s top “Drives of a Lifetime,” offering expansive views of Denali, the Alaska Range and remote wilderness. Or opt for the Tundra Wilderness Tour, a narrated coach trip showcasing classic park highlights such as Cathedral Mountain, Sable Pass and the East Fork River. For an upgrade option, enjoy a Denali Summit Flightseeing Tour, flying over snow‑covered peaks and glacier‑carved valleys, coming within half a mile of Denali’s summit. Alternatively, take a Helicopter Glacier Landing, soaring above tundra and rugged mountain terrain while watching for wildlife before touching down on the vast Yanert Glacier.

On your final day you may travel from Denali to Anchorage either by coach or at an additional cost aboard the Alaska Railroad. Those departing early by coach will enjoy narrated commentary along the scenic Parks Highway, passing striking landscapes and historic small towns before arriving in Anchorage by midday. Alternatively, you may keep your morning free for optional activities, such as rafting, flightseeing, glacier landings or hiking before boarding the Alaska Railroad’s Goldstar Railcar at midday. This scenic journey follows the Susitna River, offering chances to spot Mount Denali and wildlife along the banks, with lunch and dinner served onboard. You’ll arrive in Anchorage in the evening, where your incredible Alaskan adventure comes to an end.
