Overview

From glowworms to galaxies, discover New Zealand’s extraordinary landscapes and Dark Sky Reserves from a whole new perspective.

This carefully crafted journey invites you to explore the country through some of its most captivating after dark experiences.

By day, you’ll travel through an ever-changing landscape of volcanic plateaus, dramatic coastlines, glacial lakes and snow-capped peaks. Encounter remarkable wildlife, from seals and dolphins to penguins and albatross, and pause to enjoy the country’s celebrated wine regions.

As dusk falls, a different side of Aotearoa emerges. Step quietly into hidden caves where thousands of glow worms illuminate the darkness like living galaxies. Wander beneath towering redwoods illuminated by lantern light, and listen for the rustle of the elusive kiwi.

Your route weaves together several of New Zealand’s internationally recognised Dark Sky Reserves and Sanctuaries, each offering extraordinary opportunities for stargazing.

Throughout the journey, you’ll also be welcomed into the rich traditions of Māori culture. Stories of the stars, the land, and the ancestors reveal a deeper understanding of Aotearoa, where the night sky has long been a guide for navigation, storytelling, and identity.

Blending nature, culture and extraordinary night skies, this itinerary offers a deeper connection with New Zealand – an adventure guided as much by the stars as by the road ahead.

Itinerary

Arrive in Auckland and transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day is free to explore the City of Sails or enjoy a leisurely meal overlooking Viaduct Harbour.

This evening a cultural experience is included at Te Pā Tū, where you’ll discover Maori song, culture, and seasonal kai (cuisine) within a forest Pa (village). The seasonal menu is aligned to the maramataka (Maori lunar calendar) and includes a traditional hangi.

Enjoy a free day to explore Rotorua’s geothermal highlights, from bubbling mud pools and spouting geysers to relaxing hot pools. After dark you’ll explore the beautifully lit Redwoods Forest Treewalk, which ascends 20 metres to wind around century old trees. Suspension bridges offer a unique perspective over the ferns below and leafy canopy above, illuminated by lanterns and light features. Next make your way into a 70-metre cave filled with a very different light feature – 1000s of tiny glowworms!
