Welcome to Dalsland - with deep forests, mountains, fertile plains, white sandy beaches, canals, lakes and archipelagos. The landscape is not huge, but here you will find almost everything Sweden has to offer in one county.
Dalsland is located west of Europe's third largest lake, Lake Vänern. The county borders Norway to the north-west, Bohuslän (West Sweden) to the west and Värmland county to the north. The area is characterised by its unspoiled nature which consists mainly of large forests, clear lakes, mountains and one of the most beautiful waterways in Europe, The Dalsland Canal - intersecting the county, tying together large and small lakes into a unique area.
Located close to Gothenburg, just a couple of hours drive away, it offers great opportunities to spend time here and extend our popular Discover West Sweden self-drive in an area away from the crowds and into pure nature. After a couple of days here you'll feel a sense of calm and tranquility - enjoy the culture, beautiful lakeside settings, authentic and traditional local food and peaceful surroundings where ever you are. The area of course is perfect for outdoor pursuits, especially those on the water with canoeing, kayaking, fishing and boat trips in abundance. As well as many possibilities for hiking on well-marked trails with varying terrain and experiences.
The Dalsland Canal
A tour on the canal takes you to the heart of the most lake-rich landscape in Sweden and over the years has transformed from a transport route to a much visited attraction and a great way to enjoy the beautiful scenery. There are organised tours which run in the summer from the end of June to end of August on passenger boats M/S Storholmen and M/S Dalslandia, starting in either Bengtsfor or Håverud, taking approximately 5 hours, and can combine with a train journey back again.
We are delighted to offer accommodation in two fantastic hotels, Baldersnäs Manor in Dals Långed and Upperud 9:9 in Åsensbruk.
Baldersnäs estate is a cultural and historical treasure dating from the 18th century but also a modern hotel with a high class restaurant, surrounded by a lovely park and Lake Laxsjön's sparkling water. The main manor house has individual rooms varying in size and decor, there are also two separate wings with rooms in a more modern style and a new addition are 2 very unique glass cabins, made entirely of glass and set in a secluded position in the hotel grounds, offering a wonderful nature experience.
Upperud was formally a mill, all that remains is a five-storey grain silo which has been beautifully renovated into a unique place that offers accommodation and good food, all homemade using local and organic ingredients. The five rooms have high ceilings, plenty of space with room for four people, small kitchen facilities and french balconies. Situated next to the lake, an extra bonus are the stunning sunsets over Upperudshöljens water.
