Overview

Discover spectacular West Iceland on this flexible self drive break based at Hotel Husafell, located close to Langjokull glacier just 90 minutes drive from the rugged Snaefellsnes Peninsula. With your own car, you’ll have complete flexibility to explore the wealth of natural wonders around the south and west – from rugged coastal features to characterful villages, captivating waterfalls to striking lava fields. Armed with iDiscover, our exclusive digital travel guide, you can be sure not to miss any hidden gems as you travel around.

Reaching dramatically westward, the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, is in many ways a microcosm of Iceland as a whole. With its own fjords, ice cap, volcanoes, fishing and farming communities it is one of the country’s must visit areas. The north shore is dotted with fishing villages and is home to one of Iceland’s most asthetically pleasing mountains Kirkufell. On the south side of the peninsula, the cliffs of Arnarstapi are famed for their rock arches and blow holes.

To the south of Husafell, the Golden Circle route also provides a full day of scenic wonders, while heading further into the interior, you have the chance to explore Inside a Glacier.

Dining at Hotel Husafell is another highlight. The menu is rich in local produce and flavours offering sophisticated dishes that include imaginative creations using seafood, local beef, lamb and wild game. The restaurant’s picture windows frame stunning views of the surrounding fells and woodland.

Itinerary

Fly from the UK to Keflavik. Collect your rental vehicle at the airport and enjoy a scenic drive, perhaps taking a fjord-side route along Hvalfjordur (Whale Fjord), into West Iceland, where you can visit the Settlement Centre at Borgarnes, en route to Hotel Husafell, your accommodation for the next few nights. After checking in, head to the bar for your complimentary welcome drink.

Explore the scenic Snaefellsnes Peninsula, walking among the fantastic coastal formations at Arnarstapi and visit the fjords and fishing villages along its north side. With good weather you may have views of the mystical cone-shaped volcano and Snaefellsjokull icecap.

* Choice of Vehicles

We can offer a wide range of rental vehicles for this holiday – our team will be happy to talk you through the options and provide a quote for the most suitable category based on your individual requirements.

  • 4WD

    We would always recommend a 4WD for winter travel, but many clients also prefer the greater security and comfort that a larger vehicle provides year round – upgrade your vehicle from as little as £10 per person, per day.

  • Go electric

    With a selection of electric cars now available including the Kia Niro and Volkswagen ID.3, you can choose to upgrade from as little as £12 per person, per day. We recommend this option for summer only, due to the colder temperatures in winter affecting battery range.
