Full description

This safari has been carefully designed to maximise your photographic opportunities. Discover a backdrop of wild and spectacular landscapes, from the world’s highest sand dunes to the stark Skeleton Coast, and encounter a huge variety of wildlife species at Etosha National Park as well as the more elusive and uniquely rewarding desert adapted species of the northwest.

Flying between destinations cuts down on travel time and provides the chance to take in stunning aerial views of Namibia’s incredible topography as you travel. Your Expedition Leader is an experienced naturalist guide and accomplished photographer, always on hand to share their expertise and advice to help you get the best out of your camera and your safari experience. A maximum group size of just eight like-minded travellers will be split into two safari vehicles for game drives, to offer better wildlife viewing and more intimate animal encounters.

Accommodation is based in isolated yet luxurious safari lodges and camps, each carefully selected for their scenic location and wildlife viewing opportunities. Private reserves offer the chance to enjoy a quiet and exclusive base and partake in activities such as safari walks and night drives not permitted within the national parks; whilst by staying in close proximity it is then just a short drive into the parks in order to experience prime wildlife-viewing areas and desert landscapes.

Your guide will be hand to share his photography expertise, including in tutorials and discussions. There will usually be some informal critiques and reviews as well. With such a small group, it will be very flexible and catered to each guest's preferences.

Whether you want to capture soaring sand dunes, rugged mountains and deserted coastlines, or focus on the antics of desert elephants, hyenas, oryx and lions, Namibia is a photographer's dream – and this holiday will ensure you come home with a collection of images to treasure.

Itinerary & Accommodation

Itinerary & Accommodation

Day 1 Windhoek

Arrive in Namibia’s capital city, Windhoek, an eclectic mix of German castles, glass skyscrapers and cathedral spires. You will be met on arrival by your expedition leader and transferred to your hotel. Tonight enjoy a leisurely dinner with your fellow travellers and learn about the vast landscapes and wildlife you will be photographing during an orientation briefing.

Day 2 Windhoek - Kulala Wilderness Reserve

After breakfast, travel by light aircraft to Little Kulala, a luxurious lodge situated within the private 90,000 acre Kulala Wilderness Reserve on the edge of the world’s oldest desert, the Namib. The word ‘namib’ in the Nama language means vast - an apt name for this ancient arid expanse. From this exclusive retreat you will have the opportunity to photograph some of Africa’s most arresting landscapes, vivid sunsets and star-filled night skies.

Days 3-4 exploring Kulala and Sossusvlei

Over the next two days you will rise early to take dawn excursions to Sossusvlei, within the Namib-Naukluft National Park. Sossusvlei is a large, white, salt and clay pan, best known for the towering red sand dunes that surround it. These are among the highest in the world, reaching up to 400 metres, and provide fantastic photographic opportunities in the beautiful and ever changing morning light. Framed by intense blue skies, the shifting dunes evolve through deep red, burnished orange, then ochre and gold, changing minute by minute as the sun rises. With two day excursions in this itinerary, you have double the opportunity to photograph this iconic landscape to get spectacular images. Wildlife sightings in this area may include oryx, ostrich, springbok, spotted and brown hyena, aardwolf, bat-eared fox and the rare dune lark. There will also be time available for short walks and safari drives, as well as an optional hot air balloon flight over the dunes for breathtaking aerial views.

Days 5-7 Kulala - Skeleton Coast

Fly north toward Namibia’s evocatively named Skeleton Coast, where the stark remains of shipwrecks can be seen lying half-buried on storm-battered beaches. Your accommodation at the Hoanib Skeleton Coast is a welcoming outpost in the wilderness, set in one of the most fragile ecosystems on earth. This remote camp enjoys a scenic location at the confluence of two tributaries of the dry Hoanib River in the northern part of the private million acre Palmwag Concession, Damaraland, next to the Skeleton Coast National Park.

The next three days will be spent exploring rugged mountains, vast plains, dune fields and dry riverbeds, with one excursion to the coast itself. A range of activities is designed to maximise photography opportunities, such as nature walks, 4x4 drives and visiting hides for wildlife viewing. Search for desert adapted plants and animals, including Namibia’s largest population of desert elephant as well as giraffe, lion, oryx, springbok and steenbok. Weather permitting a trip to the Skeleton Coast will be a highlight, driving one way and returning by air. Here you may find huge colonies of Cape fur seals and a diverse array of birdlife, whilst black-backed jackal and brown hyena can sometimes be seen near the beach.

Days 8-10 Skeleton Coast - Ongava Private Game Reserve, Etosha National Park

Transfer by light aircraft to the Ongava Game Reserve on the border of Etosha National Park. The Etosha salt pan is the remnant of a huge lake that existed here two million years ago. Bare and dry today, the depression offers some of Namibia’s best wildlife photography opportunities, with elephant, black and white rhino, lion, leopard, cheetah, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, hartebeest, springbok, oryx, kudu and the diminutive dik-dik drawn to its life-sustaining waterholes. Birdlife is abundant, and you may see ostrich and raptors. Your accommodation Ongava Lodge is on a private reserve adjacent to the park, situated well away from other accommodations and tour groups. From your beautifully appointed camp you will be able to take guided walks (safety permitting) and night drives on the reserve; whilst by day you will journey into the national park to view and photograph the abundant wildlife.

Day 11: Ongava - Windhoek

Your Namibian photo safari concludes today with a flight from Ongava back to Windhoek.
