Itinerary & Accommodation

Itinerary & Accommodation

Day 1: Christchurch - Arthur's Pass

Meet your hosts and drive through the "Garden City" to the Port Hills for views of the city, the Kaikoura Range and the Pacific Ocean. Head west across the Canterbury Plains, crossing Porter's Pass to enter an inter-montaine plateau bounded by the Torlesse Mountains to the east and the Craigieburn Mountains to the west. Pass the glacial formed lakes and the stunning limestone formations of Castle Hill which dominate the landscape.
Overnight: Wilderness Lodge Arthur's Pass (2 nights).

Day 2: Arthur's Pass

This is a day to discover the real high country - a day in which you can explore and learn about the alpine landscape, plants and animals of the region. Take a tour of the high country sheep farm and see a sheepdog demonstration before taking walks to see waterfalls, alpine forests and glacial landscapes. Seek and hopefully find the world's only alpine parrot; the cheeky Kea!

Day 3: Arthur's Pass, Hokitika & Franz Josef

After breakfast, depart the Canterbury province for the west coast. This route reveals great mountain valleys, winding roads and spectacular gorges. Travel on a back country road and walk through old gold miners' tunnels before visiting Hokitika, an historical greenstone town. Pass through villages as you head further into the West Coast bush before glimpsing sight of the mighty Franz Josef Glacier.
Overnight: Te Waonui Forest Retreat

Day 4: Franz Josef - Lake Moeraki

Options abound in this beautiful region of the South Island's West Coast - take a walk to one of the glacial viewpoints and witness Fox Glacier's descent down the mountain into the rainforest or alternatively enjoy a guided hike upon the glacier itself or a scenic helicopter flight over this dramatic landscape.
Overnight: Lake Moeraki Wilderness Lodge (2 nights).

Day 5: Lake Moeraki

A day to explore the unique natural setting of Lake Moeraki set in the heart of the World Heritage Area of Te Wahipounamu. Spend the day wildlife watching seeking the rare Fiordland Crested Penguin (seasonal) as well as Hector's Dolphins and numerous varieties of native birds. Visits can be made to wild and remote beaches and activities include guided wildlife walks, canoeing on Lake Moeraki or simply relaxing in the surrounds of the lodge.

Day 6: Lake Moeraki - Queenstown

Depart Lake Moeraki today and travel south to Ship Creek, a spot popular with Hector's Dolphins. Admire ancient "dinosaur" trees, view a coastal lagoon and fossick for greenstone on the remote beach. Travel along the Haast Pass and admire the ever-changing landscape as you see dense rain forest morph into drier tussock land. Continue on to Lake Wanaka and visit the old gold mining village of Cardrona before heading over the rugged and remote Crown Range and viewing Queenstown in the valley below. Descend into the adventure capital of the world.
Overnight: Millbrook Country Resort (3 nights).

Day 7: Queenstown

Your day is free today to enjoy some of the many activities that have made this town so famous. From a relaxing cruise on the old steamship TSS Earnslaw to a more exhilarating jet boat trip through the Shotover Canyon. Dare to try the world's first ever bungy jump at Kawarau Bridge or visit one of the region's many wineries. Golf and horse trekking are also possible or you may like to hike up Queenstown Hill or round the perimeter of the remote and beautiful glacial lake.

Day 8: Queenstown & Milford Sound

Today, your highlight will be a flight to Milford Sound. Once you arrive at Milford you will be transferred to your 2 hour nature cruise. Your catamaran explores nooks and crannies along the edge of the fiord, nudging into sheer rock faces to examine flora and fauna in detail. This “ecotour” is perfect for close-up shots of seals, birds and other Fiordland wildlife, including the rarest penguin in the world, the Fiordland crested penguin, whilst the smaller boat helps you to appreciate the sheer size and grandeur of the fiords cliff faces rising hundreds of metres out of the water. You will get within touching distance of impressive geological features and close enough to feel the full force from the 15,000-year-old Stirling Falls.

Day 9: Queenstown - Mt Cook

Depart Queenstown and head north through the rugged Kawarau Gorge to visit the old gold mining town of Cromwell. Travel over the Lindis Pass into MacKenzie Country, famed for having New Zealand's highest mountains. Follow Lake Pukaki to Mt Cook National Park and Mount Cook village from where the mighty Mount Cook rises 3754 metres into the sky. Take a walk to marvel at the alpine vistas and view the Tasman Glacier, the longest glacier in the world that exists in a temperate zone.
Overnight: Hermitage Hotel

Day 10: Mt Cook - Christchurch

Travel to Lake Tekapo and head over Burke's Pass into the rolling farming country of the Canterbury Plains. Take a brief stop to taste some of the region's cheese or take an optional walk up Mt Sunday, that featured in the Lord of the Rings trilogy as Edoras. Continue on to Christchurch and your chosen accommodation and bid farewell to your hosts and guides.
