From the mountains in Queenstown to the stunning beaches of Abel Tasman National Park, there is an abundance of activities on offer to keep the whole family entertained. From the Shotover jetboat in Queenstown, to a wildlife tour on Otago's Peninsula, where you'll have the opportunity to witness one of the world's rarest penguins, the yellow-eyed penguin.

Along the way you'll also enjoy whale watching in Kaikoura, a boat cruise in Abel Tasman National Park and a 'Hole in the Rock' boat cruise in the Bay of Islands. Keeping the balance between adventure and learning we've also included a few educational stops, such as admission to New Zealand's national museum, Te Papa, located in Wellington and admission to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds in the Bay of Islands, which includes a guided tour and cultural performance.

Day 1 arrive Queenstown

You will be met on arrival and transferred to the ‘Adventure Capital of the World’. This vibrant alpine lakeside town set is nestled beneath the superb Remarkables mountain range. The rest of your day is at leisure.

Day 2 Queenstown

Today is at your leisure to relax and explore. Get your heart racing on the Shotover jet boat ride through the spectacular Shotover River Canyons. Your driver will skilfully whip the powerful boat past rocky outcrops, skim around crags and boulders, and speed through the dramatic and narrow canyons. Afterwards enjoy a smooth and scenic ride on the Skyline gondola and each enjoy 3 luge rides, offering spectacular views of the alpine town below.

Day 3 Queenstown

Today is a free day for sightseeing. You might like to join a guided 4x4 adventure tour, featuring many local film locations, or perhaps visit a nearby winery or just simply relax and admire the views!

Day 4 Queenstown - Dunedin

Collect your rental vehicle this morning and make your way to Dunedin, the second-largest city in the South Island. Its name comes from Dùn Èideann, the Scottish Gaelic name for Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. Spend the remainder of your day at leisure.

Day 5 Dunedin

Explore Dunedin today, both the city with its wonderful historic Edwardian and Victorian architecture and the Otago Peninsula with its abundance of unique and rare wildlife, including the yellow-eyed penguin. Enjoy a guided wildlife tour on Otago Peninsula including a visit to a penguin colony, for some close-up viewings of the birds. Covered trenches and observation huts will hide you so the penguins will not be frightened and you can observe them going about their daily business unperturbed.

Day 6 Dunedin - Akaroa

Travel north today to the pretty town of Akaroa, located on the once volcanic Banks Peninsula. With its French and English history, beautiful bays and playful dolphins often spotted in the harbour. En route be sure to stop off at Koekohe Beach near Moeraki to witness the famous Moeraki Boulders. Some of the boulders weigh several tonnes and the largest one can be over 2 metres wide.

Day 7 Akaroa

Today is at leisure for you to relax and explore the surrounding area. Included is an Alpaca farm tour, guaranteed to make the little ones smile while also offering spectacular sea views. Afterwards enjoy a 2-hour guided nature tour. Learn about the area’s rich history, native flora and fauna and Pohatu’s unique penguin conservation program. Offering stunning views of Akaroa Harbour you’ll be greeted by the farm’s friendly pet sheep and see White-Flippered penguins as well as monitoring nesting sites.

Day 8 Akaroa – Kaikoura

Travel north today to Kaikoura, a small seaside settlement in the Canterbury region, home to superb marine wildlife and plenty of activity options for all the family! For those interested in geology stop at Gooch’s Beach, home to fascinating spherical and semi-spherical rocks, similar to the famous Moreaki Boulders. These rocks are known as concretions which appeared on the shore after the 2016 earthquake. Visit at low tide and be sure to take care when walking on the algae covered rocks.

Day 9 Kaikoura

Today you will enjoy a whale watching expedition. Sperm whales and dusky dolphins inhabit the coastal waters of Kaikoura all year round, but Kaikoura is also visited by many other migrating whales, such as humpback whales, pilot whales, blue whales and southern right whales. This afternoon is free for you to relax.

Day 10 Kaikoura – Abel Tasman National Park

Today continue onto Kaiteriteri, gateway to Abel Tasman National Park. You’ll travel through the picturesque town of Blenheim and onto Nelson, with its art studios and wineries.

Day 11 Abel Tasman National Park

Abel Tasman National Park offers a wide range of activities for all fitness levels, from walking and kayaking to boat cruises. Today we’ve included a scenic boat cruise, suitable for the whole family, where you’ll have the opportunity to explore the spectacular coastline from Kaiteriteri to Totaranui. The remainder of your day is at leisure.

Day 12 Abel Tasman National Park

Today is a free day to spend as you wish. Be sure to pre book any additional local activities that may interest you, such as kayaking, guided hikes, birding trips or art tours as these often get booked in advance. Alternatively take advantage of the local water taxi service (must be pre-booked) and spend today on the beach with a picnic and time to play for the children.

Day 13 Abel Tasman National Park – Wellington

Make your way to Picton today and take the ferry across to Wellington. Cruise through the picturesque Marlborough Sound before arriving in New Zealand’s capital city, Wellington.

Day 14 Wellington

Today we’d recommend a walk along the waterfront to Te Papa, the National Museum of New Zealand. Included is a 60-minute ‘Introducing Te Papa’ tour. Discover the treasures and stories of Te Papa, a bold and innovative museum focusing on geology and the stories of New Zealand’s indigenous people, the Maori. This afternoon you might like to take a ride on the historic cable car, an iconic attraction in Wellington. At the top enjoy views of the city and enjoy the Cable Car Museum and Space Place at Carter Observatory.

Day 15 Wellington – Rotorua

Continue north today to the geo-thermal heartland of Rotorua. Spend the next 2 nights here exploring the local area.

Day 16 Rotorua

Today you have a free day to explore Rotorua using your Rotorua Diamond Pass, which allows you access to many of the top Rotoura attractions including the Agrodome, Skyline Skyride Gondola, Te Puia Thermal Park, Paradise Valley Springs, Rainbow Springs and the famous Polynesian Spa.

Day 17 Rotorua – Orewa

Today you’ll continue north to the township of Orewa, which lies on the Hibiscus Coast just north of the Whangaparaoa Peninsula and 40kms north of central Auckland. Orewa’s long Pacific Ocean beach is a great family friendly location for swimming, surfing and relaxing walks on the beach.

Day 18 Orewa – Bay of Islands

Today travel to Paihia in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand’s only sub-tropical region. En route you might like to stop at Waipu, a quirky little Scottish town, home to the biggest little museum in New Zealand. You could stop for lunch in the town of Whangarei, with its many cafes and restaurants or take a picnic to nearby Whangarei Falls before continuing onto Paihia.

Bay 19 Bay of Islands

Spend today at leisure to explore this stunning area. There are plenty of attractions and sites to visit and included is admission to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, this includes a guided tour and cultural performance.

Day 20 Bay of Islands

Today enjoy a magnificent Bay of Islands “Hole in the Rock” cruise. Encounter an abundance of marine mammals and wildlife and learn of the rich history and culture whilst cruising amongst the 144 stunning islands in the Bay of Islands. During the winter months there is the option to swim with dolphins when conditions are suitable, subject to sea conditions and Department of Conservation regulations. During the summer months your trip will instead include an island stop at Otehei Bay on Urupukapuka Island, with the option to stay longer on the island to explore and board a later ferry to return at your leisure.

Day 21 Bay of Islands – Auckland

Drive south today to Auckland, your final overnight stop. Today you might like to take the longer route back to Auckland stopping at Oakura Beach, Helena Bay and Mimiwhangata Coastal Park, an 850 hectare working farm, home to a small number of craggy islands and the beautiful pohutukawa trees, with their crimson red flowers. Arrive in Auckland, the City of Sails and spend the remainder of your day at leisure.

Day 22 Auckland

Spend today at leisure before your flight home. Explore Auckland’s bustling shopping district, chic waterfront bars and restaurants or head to the Auckland Museum with its impressive collection of Maori artefacts. Popular with children is Kelly Tarlton’s Sea Life Aquarium or the distinctive Sky Tower, which offers inspiring views of the city and its stunning surrounds. Make your way to the airport where you’ll drop of your rental car and depart.
