Maria's Top Travel Experiences

  • The west coast of the USA, in particular whale watching off Monterey, where she saw the amazing sight of a humpback mother and baby.
  • Speeding across Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon in Iceland on a zodiac boat and then watching the glacier carving, breathtaking.
  • Being a Musher and driving a team of huskies through the wilderness at the Ice hotel.
  • Loves Britain and everything about it.
  • Going ‘Into the Volcano’ in Iceland has to be one of the most amazing things I’ve ever done. Crossing lava fields like the moon, you then enter a dormant crater by cradle, that is lowered down 400ft (more than the height of the Statue of Liberty). The size of the chamber and the colours in the rock have to be seen to be believed.

My Favourite Place

Husavik Whale Watching - we set off in an oak fishing boat and out into the bay at Husavik. It was windy and cold and I was grateful for the all-in-one suit provided. The sea was calm and there was very little activity for about an hour; not a fin in sight. Just when we thought that nothing was going to happen, I heard a loud cheer from the port side, where apparently a humpback had breached right next to the boat. What happened next was beyond anything I could have wished for. The humpback, (we nicknamed him Johnny), began to breach from the water over and over again, we lost count at 20. The whole boat was whooping and cheering at every jump and eagerly awaiting the next trick. Johnny proceeded to swim on his side and wave his flipper at us and then turned and came back the other way repeating the move, this was followed by more breaching and massive, huge splashes that sprayed us with sea water. It was truly one of the most amazing things that I have ever seen, Johnny appeared to be putting on a show and how grateful were we.
